I know about 500 of you just clawed your keyboards into oblivion just reading the title, but hear me out. If a (for instance) elf sorcerer 10 is a CR 10 creature, and also an ECL 10 creature, shouldn't it stand to reason that a mind flayer (CR 8) should be an ECL 8 creature? I mean, I think we can all agree that 1 HD, no matter what size, is going to equal 1 character level because the HD doesn't come with any "class abilities". So; questions? Comments? Rambling on about how I'm an idiot for even thinking this?

No, no way, not a chance.

Remember, the "lifespan" of NPCs and abilties. A mindflayer that can do its mind blast only a couple of times before it is supposed to be killed by the party is far less powerful than a PC mindflayer who will use his mind blast in EVERY encounter.

CR and ECL are two totally different concepts. Just because they share one single overlap with PC classes does not mean that they are equivalent in any other way.
