Creating dire animals [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-03-07, 01:51 PM I wish to use a dire animal that isn't listed is any of the books that I own, and looking through them they don't seem to follow any real pattern for creation... so I figured I'd ask around here for advice or a template, on creating a generic dire animal.

04-03-07, 04:33 PM Through ages past (being whenever D&D first began), many people have made up dire templates, but really, you're never going to find anything that works for every animal. Look, for example, at the dire rat and the dire bat. From mundane to dire, the rat only increased from a CR 1/8 to CR 1/3, and only grew to Small size. The bat, on the other hand, jumped from CR 1/10 up to CR 2 and grew to Large. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

HERE (http://www.necromancergames.com/pdf/ToHDire.pdf) is the template, updated to 3.5, with a host of example Dire Animals.

04-03-07, 09:05 PM Yeah I noticed that, which is why I was hoping to find one that worked somewhat. Alright then I'll check out the Tome of Horror's thing, and if that fails... well I'll wing it. I've done it before to some success.

04-03-07, 10:42 PM Just keep increasing it's hit die until it feels right, they did the bat to make it ridable, so if you want a ridable gecko make it large or if you want a pet shrew make it medium :)
