How do you create and develope a vampire to ECL 13 with a class (undecided still) using the 3.5 MM rules? It's confusing.

You get gold and XP according to your ECL, and everything else according to your total HD (either racial or class).

So a level one vampire (ECL lvl 9) gets 8d12 hp and the ability modifiers outlined in the MM before proceeding onto class levels?

Read the post above yours

HD is determined by class and race

A vampire's ECL comes from 1 HD - the base class (1st level whatever race whatever class) - and the level adjustment, which does not confer hit dice, only various vampire abilities.

Okay I officially suck at creating anything with a template. I don't understand any of this.

Furthermore, don't vampires have to be at least 5 HD to be vampires, otherwise their spawn?

Okay, (in reply), look at it this way. The vampire has an ECL of +8 (ridiculous really). You have to have HD of at least 5 to be a vampire (I think). So you roll 4d12, and add that number to 12 (your first HD for an elite character) to determine your hit points. For base saves, base attack, skill points, and all that you take the number of HD in whatever class or race you have as the base (say a 5th level vampire fighter) and add it up accordingly as you would for any fifth level character. For purposes of starting gold, and starting experience however, you add 5 HD + 8 (from the vampire Level adjustment) to find your effective character level (ECL) at 13, which determines current xp and what you need to advance to next level, as well as starting gold. Got it?

So your saying I need to advance a human character as NORMAL until it has 5 HD and then put the vampire template on it as if it had just been vampirized? That will work fine then.

Actually, I think a Clr18 can cast create greater undead to make a vampire with fewer than 5 HD.

That option doesn't show up in Create Greater Undead anymore, if it ever did.

To answer Fuegan's question, no. A human character can have HD of any kind, (Class levels are still HD of a sort. I think of them that way) and humans invariably take class levels because human HD...well...I think Fae would get more out of theirs.

Designing a Vampire:

Determine your target ECL. Nominally, this could be as low as 9, although explaining how you became a full vampire with less than 5 HD is tricky. I'd ignore that part if I was the DM myself.

Your ECL - 8 is the number of class levels this human vampire could have. Yes, this will hurt. Go ahead, though, and design your not-yet-a-Vampire human to your heart's content. Make them whatever you want...they're not a vampire yet.

After you complete the full character creation to that point, apply the vampire template. Modify their abilities, including taking away their Con. Throw out any notion of HP you had earlier and regenerate the HP from scratch off d12 with no bonuses from Con, since you don't have any. Add their fantastic array of special abilities, AC bonuses, natural attacks, ect. There's a lot of them.

Place your starting XP at the amount a character of your ECL, not class level would have. For an ECL 13 Vampire, this would be 78k. Take the amount of starting gold a character of your ECL would have. You'll need it. Find this on a table in the DM's guide, page 135. (3.5 version)

Avoid holy water and bunny rabbits at all cost.
