Creature Competition 2 is set to start in a few weeks ... this time with an all new format ... a sort of weekly storyline .. and comentary by our favorite Ancient Red Dragon (Ardy)... (someone here watches too much pro wrestling)...

In any case we want your help...This is your chance to get you favorite creature into our competition...

We would like nominations for creatures for this next competition... The CR range should be 8-12 and they may be from any wizards 3.0 or 3.5 source books... Please list the book and page for us to make it easier for us to look them up... Thougfh they dont need to be purely Good or Evil those sorts of monsters are prefered... IF you wanna nominate a creature thats lower CR with some class levels etc please do so ... full stats won't be necessary...

You have till September 14th to post ... after that we can't guarantee that we will have enough time to consider your nomination... We can't use every nomination and the fine folks at Wizards will decide which creatures make it into the next competition.

I'm looking forward to your nominations...

Well, I'll nominate the 3.5 Abyssal Greater Basilisk (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/basilisk.htm#abyssalGreaterBasilisk) (Monster Manual V3.5, Page 24) and the 11-Headed (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hydra.htm) Pyrohydra (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hydra.htm#pyrohydra) (Monster Manual V3.5, Page 157)

Hydra, definetly.

I would suggest a Death Giant or Omnimental (both from MM3), but they are too high of a CR for the given range.

But whatever you do, please don't have that horrible glut of reformed evil thing turned paladin again. In fact, there were so many paladins in the last one I hope there aren't any in this round at all. I normally like paladins...

ill back the death giant if WotC is willing to allow it.

A barbarian Gargoyle always sounded interesting MM pg 113
as does a Feindish awakened Dire bear MM pg 63

I would LOVE to see one of my favorite monsters, the Entropic Reaper (Libris Mortis, page 98) in the next Creature Competition. Thanks WotC!

Three Nominees:
Shadow Dragon (page 191, Draconomicon) Dracolich (template from Draconicomcon, page 146-148)
Draegloth (Champions of Ruin, page 8-11)
Psion Killer (EXPH, page 208)

A few nominations:

How about a dwarven paladin / stonelord who can combine smite evil with earth power for one BIG attack

A durzagon (MMII p124) blackguard perhaps?

A Satyr Assassin. (3.5 MM I p219 and 3.5 DMG p180) combining the natural stealth abilities of the satyr with the class skills of the assassin. This guy is the deadliest fey of all.

ooze master (3.0 masters of the wild p67) I don't care what race, I just want to see an ooze master in battle (especially since the jelly won the grudge match) Half orc is my preferrd race for the ooze master, but anything ugly will do such as a troglodyte.
How about a troglodyte druid turned ooze master with a dire toad for an animal companion?

Treant blighter (3.5 MMI and 3.5 Complete Divine) I have no idea why a treat would become a blighter. He's probably a weed or battling some imported plant that doesn't belong to the ecology and just flipped out. Now he's a tree that uses trees as weapons against other trees and anyone else who enters his forest.
Stop laughing! This is no sillier than a succubus turned paladin!

An Inevitable from 3.5 MMI p158. Any of the three would be cool, but I'd love to see one in battle. A zelekhut could also have class levels such as Master of Chains from 3.0 Sword and Fist

Big T failed, but how would Tyrannosaurus Rex do?

i think seeing a barghest in the creature competition would be awsome if it had a few class levels to get it to the cr requriermnt

I'd like a Githyanki Archer character on Red Dragonback.

A Multi-Armed Sahuagin Fighter-Blackguard-Kensai. I had one of these be an underwater BBEG bodyguard, I was particularly proud of it.

As per the request for the Page Number:

Sahuagin: Monster Manual 1: 217.
Blackguard: Standard SRD Prestige Classes section (Sorry, don't have 3.5 DMG)
Kensai: Complete Warrior: 49

Kolyarut (Monster Manual v.3.5. page. 159)
Kobold Avenger

08-30-05, 11:22 PM
'Rhandis' Dark Stalker Soulknife (FF, XPH) A spy of a Dark One tribe who sell his (or her) services at a special cost and never gold which could be secrets, or favours owed to the Dark Ones... Rhandis is a silent figure who strikes in darkness quickly and decisively with a blade of shadows, never being identified by the victrims.

'Aerith-Kai' Shadar-Kai Hexblade (FF, CArc) Many have fallen before the wrath of this vicious warrior from the plane of shadows. Those who have survived combat against him are inevitably cursed to fall later, to this dark fey who seeks spread the curse of his kind to the races from the 'worlds of light'.

'Laenya' Coure Eladrin Warlock (BoED, CArc) This spritelike celestial calls upon the primal powers of the fey, which she watches over as their self-appointed guardian. Her childish demeanor hides the true power she can unleash on her foes.

I nominate the following:

- Daillia Thistledown F halfling lich bard 12 CR 14 (Libris Mortis p. 153)
I like her desrciption. A little high on the CR, so remove some class levels.

- Rakshasa, Zakya Medium Outsider (Native) CR 8 (Eberron Campaign Setting p.297-298)
Because an Eberron monster should be in.
Meshakhad

08-31-05, 12:48 AM
I nominate Shandril Shessair, human spellfire channeller.

Sourcebooks: Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, Magic of Faerun.

Resume:
Has slain, to date:
1 dragon
3 dracoliches
Manshoon
Manshoon's lover
Fzoul Chembryl
Countless Zhentarim
Half a dozen beholders
A lich-lord

Has made friends with, to date:
Elminster
The Simbul
Storm Silverhand
Mirt of Waterdeep

Unfortunately, she is also married (and DEEPLY in love), so the sex factor won't work.

Slagger the Chuul

08-31-05, 03:54 AM
Proposing:

Ethereal Filcher Monk: Four fists of fury and the ability to duck in and out of the Ethereal Plane makes for a tough customer.

Ghost Mermaid Bard: You don't see mermaids on land? You do when they can also swim through the earth and air, and she's got a lovely singing voice.

Medusa Vampire: What could face a medusa's deadly gaze? Only a creature that's already beyond the mortal coil. The result is a snake-haired horror guaranteed to give you nightmares.

Chuul Psychic Warrior: Leaping out of the water to grab characters is good. Being hyped up on psychic energy when you do it is better.

Seconding:
Pyrohydra (the more heads the better)
Treant (not sure about it being a blighter)
Minotaur of Legend (I'd prefer barbarian to cleric)

My ideas should be...

Cryokineticist Githyanki (MM - 127) because controlling ice is cool (bad joke here).

True Necromancer Rakshasa (MM - 211). Deadly combination.

Artificer Cansin (Dragon Magazine #297 - 63). This race of planetouched can be great artificers, I think.

A monster with six templates: Spellwarped (MMIII - 163) Legend (MMII - 213) Fiendish (MM - 107) Vampire (MM - 250) Half Chaos Dragon (Draconomicon - 166 & MM - 146) Phrenic (EPH - 205) Tyrannosaurus (MM - 61). Total CR: 20. And, unlike the Tarrasque, this one has brains. (I have checked the first post and discovered that this CR is too high...).

And, finally, a joke monster: Urban Druid Nymph (MM - 197).
Demon Pharo

I would like to possibly see a Kyton with class levels in what ever or Possible even a Halfling spellthief what ever is cool though.
Always gotta go for the little guys Halflings rock.

maybe a Tiefling of a sort with levels in Assassin or shadowdancer
and put this with the halfling that would work pretty good

The Vorpal Tribble

08-31-05, 01:17 PM
#1. Trilloch (Monster Manual III, p. 176)
#2. Pthisic (from the Expanded Psionics Handbook, with higher HD to make it 8th level or higher, p. 206)
#3. 10th level blue goblin (p. 189) or elan (p. 9) psion (XPH as well)

Also:
Tsochar inhabited anything (Lords of Madness, p. 121)

----

Also agree with the Psion Killer or anything from the XPH really.

What would really be cool in the future is a book based on the Gloom. Next to the Trilloch and Pthisic he's my favorite D&D creature.

A visage from Libris Mortis page 130.

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/libris_gallery/84777.jpg

An extraplanar undead race created by Orcus to serve him even if said uberdemonprince have forgotten about them. They are sort of doppelgangers that can assume the identity of people they killed. A Visage assassin, that would be swell!!!

Proposing:

Adult Phaerimm (Lost Empires of Faerūn, page 189). Definitely want to see one of these guys in an adventure.

Wild Elf Half-Vampire Ranger6/Blackguard4 (Race - Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting pg. 15, Half-Vamp template - Libris Mortis page 106, classes PHB pg. 46 & DMG pg. 181). I've been dying to see a decent Half-Vampire show up somewhere, and I've been considering using something like this in my campaign.

Aasimar Paladin8/Knight of the Chalice2 (Race - Monster Manual page 209, classes PHB pg.42 & Complete Warrior pg. 53). I had to work a Paladin in here somewhere :D . A true demon-hating fiend-slaying crusader.

Seconding

Hydra - not the pyro, just the plain Hydra (TwinBahamut's post, Monster Manual pg. 155)
Shadow Dragon Dracolich (lightman's post, post#7)
Justice Archon Blackguard (Mercurius' post, post #25)

5-headed red dragon clr/Unholy Ravager of Tiamat: A red dragon completly devout to Tiamat, His 4 extra heads are a blessing from his constant prayers.

Pseudodragon Paragon: The familiar of a epic spellcaster who died from old age. Although it has lost its familiar qualities, it retained its "perfection".

Halfling legendary were-eagle rog/Whisperknife: A daring rogue, expert in dagger-wielding, has helped a injured eagle, but got bitten in the process. As a result, he could transform into a legendary eagle. Was it a sign from the Gods of justice, pushing the halfling to become a vigilante instead of a criminal ?

Silver half-dragon/half-human pal/Platinum Knight/Vassal of Bahamut: A born half-breed who witnessed the death of his father, savagely wounded by a gang of white dragons. Depressed in sorrow and fear, he praided Bahamut for protection for his mother from these beasts. Now he guard his hometown, riding his spiked felldrake mount into battle, thanking Bahamut for his success.

Aventi drd/Wavekeeper with plesiosaur animal companion (symbiotic): A aquatic explorer who has performed a ritual to form a stronger bond with his animal companion. The result is a symbiotic being with the plesiosaur as the host and the aventi as the guest.

Huh!... *whistle like nothing happened* Yeah, maybe but hey, we're talking about a competition here, so we need some real challenge. Beside the last competition had the Tarrasque, a CR 20 contender. So it wouldn't matter to have some high challenges.

Hold on, the halfling legendary were-eagle has a base CR of 5 and the symbiotic aventi-plesiosaur has a base CR of 12 (aventi drd 10 with plesiosaur CR 10), so some of my ideas work.

Mind Flayer Illithid Savant2/Illithid Slayer2
This dangerous outcast from illithid society was exiled after he proved to difficult to kill for his crime of eating the elder brain.

A misdemonothropic deserter from the blood wars that seeks to exert his dominance over all other demons.

Seconding:
Treant (not sure about it being a blighter)

Okay, I only suggested Blighter so I could poke fun at last season's winner.

What about a treant with levels in something more logical (druid, ranger, barbarian?)

Or that just gets advanced by size?

Maybe even with a template? dragons will procreate with anything so a half dragon treant? Just a question id which colour: Red would be interesting given they get immunity to fire, but green would probably be most appropriate.

So I'll change that nomination to Treant Half Green Dragon.

Also seconding:
Barbarian Gargoyle
Multi-Armed Sahuagin Fighter-Blackguard-Kensai
Daillia Thistledown

Hmmm... CR 8-12?

There any stats for a mongoose or dire mongoose out there? A goblin were-mongoose ranger (favored enemy: monstrous humanoids (with particular focus on Yuan-ti)) would be neat.

How about a tauric (MMII or Savage Species) changeling-monstrous scorpion (Large) elemental warrior?

A spell weaver (MMII), perhaps? There's just too much potential in these things for a storyline and nowhere to go with it. Perhaps a ranger or hexblade (from CW)?

hm, 2 favourites of mine:

I once used an order of ninjas of the crescent moon (Sword&Fist) in old 3.0 days. I just thought: Ninjas are cool.
And I also thought: Trolls are cool. So i made a Troll-Ninja-Clan.
Kusari-Gama swinging and oversized shuriken throwing trolls. I was happy.
The leader was simply called "Yoshi", but that was the fault of Nintendo. In fact, it was a female troll (and had CR 19).
That was quite awesome, I even invented a special troll unarmed sneak attack: sneak from behind, move your hands slowly to the left and right of an head and "clap" for tons of (sneak-attack) damage. I made a fancy move of it in later sessions to indicate, how they were sneaked (and added 1.5 times Str for both hands) :D
And to make them really evil, I gave some trolls in later encounters access to the "Snow Tiger Berserker" feat (Unapproachable East) and an old version of "Flying Kick" (Complete Fighter). So they had full round charges. Nowadays I would use "Leap Attack" (Complete Adventurer). Especially cool on surprise rounds.
My conclusion was: Trollitsu (that is a troll with Snow Tiger Berserker, I renamed that feat to Trollitsu) is superior. But inferior to MoO-Fu (but that would be another story).
CR 5 troll + 3 Monk + 4 Ninja of Crescent Moon (or only 2 Monk and 5 Ninja with average BaB, or simply troll + 7 levels of the new ninja base class). 4 levels Of N.o.t.C.M. is not superb, no invisible trolls...

The M&M: The Magmin Monk.
I once used this devasting crossbreed, and adopted the "pyro" feat from Song&Silence. If I remember right, it burned more than 100k gold. I just adopted the DCs to all HD (class and monster), was a bit unfair, but I also cutted a feat for that.
The magmin is quite devastating by himself: able to melt weapons AND damage reduction. Just add good saves, speed, evasion, vow of poverty (he cannot wear anything anyways) and you have a really nasty opponent. With elemental qualities.
The background story of this guy was quite simple: he was able to use spellfire (Magic of Faerun), and killed another Magmin with this ability in his past. So he realised fire is harmful to others and tried to get in control of his playfulness.
In the end it was my best item killer I used up to now at mid levels. Even compared to any rustmonster-anything crossbreeds (as e.g. half-illithid/half-rustmonster) or Sunder-Maniacs. Only Mordenkains is nastier.
Magmin CR 3, +1 CR to have class levels, 8 monk. Unlike normal monks, his highest attribute is constitution. Hm, i cannot find my notes with him, and I forgot the name (except M&M). it was something complicated, and quite now I would simply call him "Master Flame", or "Come on baby, light my fire".

I better get some sleep now.

I'll be nominating the 3.5 Nycaloth (MM3, p.203), and the 3.5 Mezzoloth (MM3, p.201) (with fighter levels and/or Mortal Hunter PrC levels (BoVD))

Yugoloths need more pimping in 3e, so give them a shot in the Creature Competition :)

I'd suggest the Arcanaloth from the MM2 except for some bizzare reason it's given a higher CR than the Ultroloth*, despite being lower in the yugoloth caste heirarchy.

I would definitely go with Shandril Shessair, but how about having Drizzt? I mean they have stats for him in the Forgotten Realms Corebook, and while I know he has starred in a lot of novels, has he been in any published adventures? He does have a higher CR then they want, but it would be pretty easy to tailor it to the needs of the contest(like have it be a past version of him). I haven't played that much of the newer D&D(3.0 +), so I just do not know if he has been in a lot of adventures lately. If he has, disregard this.

I'd rather they not include Drizzt and Shandril.

You learn enough about their stats and personality through the books. What's the damned point? It's a waste of time. (Oh great, another story about Drizzt.)

I'd rather they develop something new for those of us who want new ideas, new personalities.

*sigh* I was hoping nobody would suggest him - now we're doomed to sit through the complaining of every other vocal individual that dislikes him who happens to pass through this thread  . Oh well, as for the suggestion itself: no, hes not been in an adventure, but he wasn't designed to be. Hes a novel character, pure and simple. His books are his adventures, and he already has a group of friends he shares them with, he doesn't need to be included in an adventure designed for PCs. The same is true Shandril - shes had her stories, let someone else into the adventures that are being designed for players to go through.

The Animated Object, this one just holds so much potential.

Such as:
Animated Toilet: Prompts adventurers to sit upon it. And that's it. Aspires to be the "Throne" upon which the King sits, one day. Until then, it pushes the paranoia and weirdness factor in your games. May never beat anyone in a fight, but it'd be nice to see how far a friendly toilet could go in a creature competition.

Although someone's already mentioned the Rakshasa (MM pp.211-212), I wanted to give it another mention -- with its change shape ability, you almost never know what it is that you're fighting, and its hefty SR and DR make it hard to bring down. Take one that does not disdain close combat and slap a little Eldritch Knight onto it -- a rakshasa's defenses are already formidable, and its SR rises with class levels. It already has full BAB/spellcasting so continuing it as a gish is nasty... and with PC levels comes an elite array, some better feat choices (including Arcane Strike), and this thing will leave a trail of pain and blood through your party of would-be heroes without them even knowing what is doing this to them...

For folks that like to vote for a "big hitter" along the lines of troll frenzied berserker (but something that qualifies a little more easily), an ogrish dire werewolf (MM pp.175-177, "Creating a Lycanthrope")clocks in at only CR 6, leaving room for a couple levels of fighter and barbarian each. Take an ogre's physical brawn, boosted by a dire wolf's might and slap elite array stats and some tactical prowess and rage, and you have a terror that can ruin your whole day.

Simple and scary? Greater shadow (MM pp. 221-222)... Str damage with every touch, and it Spring Attacks at you out of the ground and back in. Quickly accompanied by a bunch of regular shadows from its kills, this brings a whole new meaning to "pyramid scheme." (And though it doesn't list any further advancement, imagine figuring out how to apply a few monk levels to a greater shadow....)

I have a cool idea:

Sh'ith Makrun: Deathlock (Libris Mortis, page 94) with 8 levels in Warlock (Complete Arcane, pp.5-10). So yes, you guessed it, a Deathlock Warlock.

His books are his adventures, and he already has a group of friends he shares them with, he doesn't need to be included in an adventure designed for PCs. The same is true Shandril - shes had her stories, let someone else into the adventures that are being designed for players to go through.

Neither Drizzt nor Shandril are likely to get a look in. This is a competition for the monstrous guys.

Now a half-celestial drider Drizzt might be another matter. :D

To his credit, he might be referring to Monkey and not to Son Gokou.

I've only seen he Moneky from that old cartoon series with that red extending quarter staff, whos this Gokou dude? oh well, Theres also a very interesting creature that can be used, i know of, "A mad Bronze dragon afflicted with the Namless illness (dragon #313)." Now, CR can be a problem yes, BUT in exchange for a good story and cool new powers, the dragon DOES lose spell like abilities and spells, so the CR does drop a bit, so an Adult dragon should wrok out fine.

Goku is the main character in the epic anime series Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and additionally Dragonball GT. He is a Saiyan male, Saiyans being a race who have monkey-like tails and can transform into massive apes under the light of the full moon. He possesses a red staff called Nyoibo that can extend to any length. He later acquires a cloud called the Nimbus that allows anyone of pure heart to ride atop it.

As you can see, his equipment if not his character design is heavily influenced from the Saiyuki japanese tails. The creator of the series is the rather famously known Akira Toriyama

Unfortunately, the limit is 1-12. On that note I'd like to see my Young Red Dragon Saint(Pg. 185-186, BoED), adopted by a mated pair of silver dragons after they slew his and his siblings parents while they were in eggs, with 3 levels of Sacred Warder of Bahamut(Pg. 96-97, Draconomicon.)

Some nominations:

- Fiendish bulette. Normally a monster of animal intelligence, the template kicks it up to at least Int 3, making this base CR 9 beastie eligible for class levels.

- Mummified human monk. Using the mummified creature template from Libris Mortis (CR +3), we're looking at a 5th to 9th level monk with undead HD, +10 natural armor, +8 Strength, +4 Wisdom (and thus another +2 AC), and +4 Charisma; fast movement offsets or overcomes the mummy's natural speed penalty, the monk's excellent saves are a great boon to the normally Fortitude-impaired and Reflex-weak undead, and evasion means a chance to dodge the worst of those annoying fireballs and flame strikes. Throw in flurries, stunning blows, and wholeness of body (a small safety net for the otherwise "destroyed at 0 hp" undead), and we're talking about a pretty scary customer.

- Nymph druid. "Usually chaotic good" alignment puts neutral good or chaotic neutral within reasonable reach, and really, a nature spirit/demigoddess should have little problem adapting to the role of a nature priestess. She'll be short on wild shaping options and her animal companion will be relatively weak, but she gets very good saving throws, deflection, good damage reduction, the power to stun with a look, and very nice wild empathy checks. Best of all, her natural druid magic stacks with druid levels, overcoming the usual drawbacks of a spellcaster with a high LA. And as a nod to the Greeks, give her a human son who is also her cohort, a barbarian, fighter, or ranger who is defending his mother and learning the tricks of the wild before he goes off on his own to become a mighty hero of legend.

We had Mind Flayers, we had drow, we had 2 lichs, we had 2 tanar'Ri, etc. time for new contenders.

My choices are; A Solar blackguard: Too much CR but this dude would win his fair share on matchs. (MM1/DMG)

Amazon Orc woman: I wish i had Savage species but since i don't give her some feral prestige class along with Bar levels. This is a solid logical choice that is generic (orc) and unquie (orc woman) at the same time (MM1, Savage Species)

Rust Monster Monk: I know sounds cheese but takeing away from the traditonal image of a monk, Rusty has much to gain from being trained to defend itself and equalizing the odds with weponed opponets and since it can not wear armor, this is a natural choice. (Lets see Janney Shadowguant beat him!) (MM1,PHB)

Artificial illumination, even a light or continual flame spell, does not negate this ability. A daylight spell, however, will.

Fast Healing (Ex): regains lost hit points at the rate of 10 per round.

Haste (Su): The creature is supernarurally quick. it can take an extra partial action each round, as if addected by a haste spell.

Immunities (Ex): The creature is immune to acid, Ploymorphing, Petrifaction

Reflectuve Hide (Su): The creature has a silvery sheen to it's skin and is permanently protected by a spell turning effect.

Thunder Clap: As a Full-Round Action you may make a 130-foot cone of sound, all targets in the cone must make a Fort save (DC 38) or be deafened, any one who fails the save by 5 or more are knocked down.

Pain Mastery: Per 50 HP of damage taken gain +2 Str

Fling Enemy:You can make a grapple check at a -20 penalty against an opponet at lest two sizes smaller then you. if you succeed, on your next turn you can use an attack action to fling a held opponent. the range increment of a thrown creature is 120 feet.
If thrown vertically it takes falling damage, if thrown horizontally it takes half the damage it'd have taken from falling the same distance.
You may as well fling a creature at a another creature. to do so make an attack roll at a -4 penalty with appropriate range penalties against the target creature. if it hits both creatures take the ammount of damage that the thrown creature would have taken otherwise.

I didn't know there was a cartoon based on Xi You Ji other than the first Dragonball series.

After you mentioned it, I Googled and found Monkey Magic. I'm going to assume that's what you were referring to.

For the record, yes, I was referring to "Sun Wu Kong" (Chinese) or "Son Goku" (Japanese), not "Goku from the Dragonball series". I don't consider the Saijin to be monkeys.

I don't care too much about Dragonball... I found out about Sun Wu Kong because he's part of a rather famous Asian myth. He's pretty much as Epic as you can get. As a D&D character, he qualifies as a super-munchkin who steals from and fights the Gods. I read a series of books detailing Xi You Ji/Saiyuki/Journey to the West in Chinese at my local friendly University's library quite a long time, before Dragonball made its appearance (yes, I'm old). I was rather fond of that series.

Nexxonnomen: Doppelganger Rog2 mnk2 (MM page 67, PHB pages 50 and 41)
A doppelganger with Sneak Attack, high dexterity AND wisdom bonuses to AC, Improved Evasion, etc? Makes a good assassin without necessarily being evil.

"Saint Frank": Awakened Flesh Golem Cleric of multiple deities (MM page 136, Savage Species for the Awaken Construct spell, PHB page 31)
Awakened by a wizard who needed a construct that could think for itself, Frank's new free will has caused it to devote itself to the worship of the creator-deities of the creatures it's made up of.

"Thud": Maug Artificer 6(Feind Folio 122, Eberron Campaign Setting 29)
Not exactly a Warforged, but Thud still makes a good artificer, and support for any construct army.

Human Were-Hippogriff(MM 152/175)
Because, hey, every creature contest needs some rules cheese.

Juggernaut. In Marvel Comics the character by this name is the "virtually unstoppable powerhouse," but what about in the D&D universe? (MM2 pp.132-133)*shudders*

This is certainly a contender for the "nothing like their CR" competition winner.

First off: CR 11, SR 36.

Yup. Even an 11th level character who has somehow spent ~45% of her recommended wealth-by-level on an orange ioun stone and has the Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration feats has exactly zero chance to break SR for this creature. If the same character is a divine caster and instead spends ~39% of her recommended wealth on the hideously broken strand of prayer beads (to get the bead of karma) and has the same feats, she still only has a 10% chance to break SR of a creature supposedly with CR equal to her level.

But that's not all! Not only does it have construct immunities, but, just for kicks and giggles, it has immunity to three different energy types.

Can't hurt it with magic? How about melee? Not a good idea. It has significant AC, a large number of fairly hefty attacks any of which can trigger improved grab, and more the point, if you are close enough to melee it can probably just steamroller you, which is very, very bad.

Nonmagical ranged attacks? Might be your best option -- but it has a wide range of spells it can throw at attackers harassing it from a distance, and can screen itself with walls of force.

If you do manage to somehow damage the thing, it has hefty fast healing, and can hide inside a cocoon of force until it is fully restored (all it takes are some sufficiently well-worded orders, presumably).

Running away might sounds like a good idea, except a number of the juggernaut's spells are designed to keep you from doing that.

CR 11? Yeah, right. While we're at it, we might as well nominate the adamantine clockwork horror (MM2, pp.47-49) for the "Monsters Whose Actual Use in a Campaign is Most Likely to Get You Defenestrated by Your Own Players" contest: at "CR 9" it can disjunction at will. (Since that's not enough, it has another 9th level attack spell at will, as well as one of the strongest ray attack spells, also at will.)

It wouldn't get more interesting by introducing the most mundane critter of all. The Human. Three Levels of Paragon and Nine Levels of Bard. He's out for adventure, good ale, and all the exotic women he can find. I think there's a fairly large fanbase for the Human-Race and believe he could be a contender if only given the chance. After all, Human's are capable of some pretty spectacular things.

I nominate a minotaur wizard

I would also like to nominate a halfling wizard, who spends most of his time crafting wands, and he wears a wide brimmed hat, rides his dog everywhere, calls people 'partner', greets with howdy, and has all of his wands hanging from his belt. whenever he meets another wizard he challenges them to a 'quickdraw wand fight'

Since a Goblin is considered 2 levels lower when it takes classes.....
A 14th lv. Goblin Fighter or Psion(Telepath)
Or a Human True Necromancer with the Skeleton Minion variant(Unearthed Arcana) spending his 12 levels worth of gold in equiping his minion. Maybe picking up the Undead Leadership feat allowing him to have an undead horde at his disposal. It would still take a cleric/paladin a while to wade through all of that, but not sure if the Horde would up his CR.

My suggestions:

A Xill Monk (MMI). You don't want to know how many attacks this critter can deliver in a round. All that you know is he is stuck to you the following round, you're paralysed the round after, and you have a few eggs in your chest in the last round.
A Pixie Marshall (Marshall is from Mini Handbook): You don't see this her. But her friends are fighting far too well...
An Half-Troll Nymph (Half-troll is from Fiend Folio, Nymph is from MMI): Walking through the forest, you see a beautiful feminine silhouette near a pond, turning back to you. Getting closer, you realise she is holding a dead deer in her claws and eating it crude. Oh! And by the way, she is green...
A Derro Gestalt Paladin of Slaughter/Wielder (Derro: MMI, PoS & Gestalt: Unearted Arcana, Wielder: XPH): This mad little guy is so self-confident that no spell can damage him. He only want one thing: to kill you...
An half-golem (anyone) human wereape: In any form, this creature keep its artificial arm, for a disturbing effect...

In addition, I second the following nominations:
Fire-souled Nymph Blackguard/Dervish.
Barbarian Gargoyle
Ghost Mermaid Bard

Umber Hulk Wilder. Umber Hulks are bad enough, but an Umber Hulk who uses psionics in addition to its already formidable claws and gaze attack is a party killer. Higher Charisma makes his gaze even more effective against close range foes, while enemies who get farther away find themselves on the recieving end of an Energy Ball or similarly unpleasant power.

Heh, another suggestion:

An half-fey baleen whale (Half-fey is from Fiend Folio, baleen whale in MMI). It's only CR 7, so we could advanced the HD. The basic is we have a Gargantua flying thing, with many spell-like abilities. It could be used as a flying platform by an elven army of archers for devastating effect...

Sure your Half-X Y-Monster of Y sounds uber cheesy and would do great in a creature competition, but I don't think for a second that really matters. All that matters is Style, Flavor, and Popularity.

Big T could've stomped on Meepo and not even noticed the Kobold filling up between his toes, the Spider Iron Golem/Drow Lich stood mountains higher in power than a Succubus Paladin. And the Badger... well it was still a nice addition and it definitely belongs in there as many Wizards will recall that the Celetial Badger is your best Summon Monster at Low Levels, I just think it was a joke that passed over many heads.

I nominate the half-blue dragon whale from this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=496729) thread, the Gelatinous Hypercube from this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7072618&postcount=18) thread, and the Iron Golem/Brain-in-a-jar combo from this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=482366) thread.

Someone suggested the idea of an Animated Object.
So I would like to nominate Baba Yaga and the Hut on Foul Legs.

Baba Yaga (lvl 9 Human Sorceress), and a Gargantuan Animated Object (Wooden Hut on gaint chicken legs), Encounter Level of 10.

While I really like this idea, have you read many legends about Baba Yaga? I'd say she's a lot higher than level 9... at least level 20, maybe epic.

Also, she flies around on a mortar and pestle.

I fear I only knew the very basics about her. As for level, I just wanted to nominate something that migth be fun in an adventure, has a bit of flavor, and fit in the 8-12 CR. Besides, all epic level creatures/people had to be level 9 at some point ;)

I wasn't quite sure what to make her, so I just decided to make her into a Sorcerer. I figured it was the closest thing to a Witch this side of the Warlock.

If people want, I can either bump Baba Yaga up a few levels or make her into another creature such as a Nigth Hag.

In addition, I second the following nominations:
Fire-souled Nymph Blackguard/Dervish.
Barbarian Gargoyle
Ghost Mermaid Bard
ogrish dire werewolf
Nordom, Rogue Modron
Hey, thanks for the support.

I really think that kind of NPC would work out nicely. We see too many redeemed villain types. Most people think it's easier to "fall from grace" than to "atone for sins"; yet, I always see redeemed villain types on the boards. Ogre Mage saints. Succubus paladins. Sanctified Illithids. It's absurd! We need more corrupted celestials and fey!

I hope to see a nymph that isn't a druid. That is just too... expected! Besides, I think it would be interesting to read up on the story of how this nymph fell into corruption and became a blackguard in the first place. (For love? For revenge?).

The concept certainly isn't as strange as some of the others presented on this thread, but I believe it should be unique and interesting enough. When we picture paladins and blackguards, we always see them in shining metal or dark metal armor, respectively. Obviously, this one won't have metal armor, because she's a dervish, so I'm interested in seeing how others would portray her.

She wouldn't be a pushover either, with Saving throws that go through the roof (Unearthly Grace increases AC and saves by Charisma modifier; Dark Blessing grants bonus to Saves by Charisma modifier), and a very good perform (dance) skill for her dervish dance.

I'd like to nominate the werewolf. You'd probably want to add some levels to a normal werewolf to bring it into the CR range.

Somethink like Ex-Monk 2 / Barbaran 2 would be interesting. A normal monk was attacked by a werewolf, afflicted with lycanthrope, and failed his will save thus becoming chaotic evil. Ofcourse, the story could become more indepth, covering the evil acts he did while still struggling with his new curse.

Hecatoncheires is one of the worst thought-out monsters. CR 57... for a monster that deals 2d6+25 damage per attack at +78 BAB and AC 74... with very limited spell-like abilities.

Sure, it has 100 attacks... but its movement speed is 100 ft...

Anyway,
for those that missed the memo, the CR limit for our nominations is 12.

Nothing above CR 12.

Gotta love that treant blighter.

I nominate.

1. Kobold Sorceror/Barbarian/Rage Mage - combining the natural knack for corcery of the kobold with its, um, natural ferocity?

2. Thri-keen Fighter/Ranger - Uses two bows of speed with rapid shot to create the ultimate shooting machine.

Some great stuff here ...

We are currently putting together the list of the 16 competitors for the "Creature Competition 2 -- Good vs Evil Arena Rumble". Which will be revealed as the competition starts.

You should see the voting begin sometime late next week.

The format for this one is a little different with 4 or more creatures starting out in the arena together and the lowest vote getter(s) being eliminated while a new competitor(s) enters. Sort of a Pro Wrestling Battle Royal style. Including comentary from Ardy and his sidekick, and maybee even a little bit of a storyline.

Who enters on what week is determined by us but who leaves is up to you.

I think we will all have alot of fun with this one.

All right! Can't wait for this one to start - having an actual story behind it this time will be great, and those whom have someone they nominated show up will no doubt be having just that much more fun.

But a quick query, if I may: since this is a good vs. evil battle, will the roster attempt to balance the number of good creatures to evil ones? Like 8 good - 8 evil, or 7-9? Or will we wind up with something like 11-13 evil creatures and just a couple of good guys? Hopefully the former, but looking back over the suggestions reveals comparatively few "good guy" suggestions and tons of evil creatures, sooooo...

Should have followed the threads, missed the nominations. Would have nominated a 10th level warrior corrupted bugbear. Corrupted is a template from Book of Vile Darkness. Give the corrupted bugbear an axe and boost his chances to get a crit, and he becomes a mean death machine that is difficult to bring down with the benefits of corruption. If you are a DM, give it a try, you might like it. Good bodyguards for a wizard BBEG.

Te'sal, NE Male Half-Drow Ftr1/Rgr3/Wiz8 : Son of a drow wizard and a human slave, Te'sal soon learned that he had no place among either of his parent's people. Now burning with a seething hatred for both Humans and Drow, Te'sal hunts his forebears with skill, magic, and steel. While he knows his best asset in combat is his magic, he usually can't resist jumping into the fray with his magic Longsword and Bladed Gauntlet.

As a player of paladins for almost 30 years, I have to give my primary vote to Sir Zeev" Aasimar Knight of the Chalice. Whenever there is a chance to smite evil, any true paladin would not hesitate to step to the front of the party. I agree with a lot of other folks, I would also love to see a Death Giant from MM3. I think with a couple of levels of anti-paladin, he would be unstopable. :)

For this round, I'm betting the Titan drops out. Despite the fact that it is literally a war machine, I wont be able to stand up to repeated ranged assault. That Hydra won't help things either. It just lacks in versatility, and won't be able to stand up to the other combatants over the entire round.

I place my final victory vote for everyones favorite bard, Harold the Mighty.

Edit: This round, I voted hydra.

Sorec is an unusual character I created a while ago after being excited at the many new templates in Savage Species. Sorec if an Insectile (Savage Species page 121) Anthropomorphic Rhinoceros (Savage Species page 216). He had 6 levels in fighter, and was actually quite wicked with his four short swords. I know it's an incredibly late nominee...but I figure it can't hurt, right?

A Girralon monk with feats that give him extra monk attacks with his extra arms. Perhaps also with Teifling or Assimar to give him a dex or wis bonus. I also like combat reflexes combined with the 10' reach and high dex, so make it a Teifling.

How about a Striaght Shadow Golem CR8 (from memory) - With only two Add ons DR is 20/Magic & Adminte & Blungeoning (All three must be meet)
and In Cr extra HD = Total or CR12

Beat that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, I am begging the site to do one of these with epic monsters. The hellfire wyrm, hecatoncheires, sirrushes, and epic dragons are way too cool to be passed up. In any case, here are my suggestions:

- Wyrmling Force Dragon (Epic level handbook) It's a CR 13, I'm not sure if that's going to be allowed, but I'll put it out there anyway.

- Grargat: Iron half-golem Dretch death knight Paladin of slaughter 2 - CR 10
(Half golem is in MMII, dretch is in MM, death knight is in MMII, and paladin of slaughter is a variant paladin class from Unearthed Arcana)

- A Hound Archon level 8 Thrall of Demogorgon (Hound archon is in MM, Thrall of Demogorgon is a prestige class from Book of Vile Darkness)

- Backtra Gordta: A young orc in his prime often possessed by rage, he rules his tribe through might alone. All those who even let one word of dissent pass their lips can expect to be silenced by a scything greataxe.
- Barbarian 9 Frenzied Berserker 4
(Orc is from MM, Frenzied Berserker is a prestige class from Complete Warrior)
This is a CR 13, I know, but the deathless frenzy ability from level 4 FB is key.

:r: :b: My nomination is the Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon (Page 184-85 Epic Level Handbook.) :u:
The Dragon flowed foward. Made of something not Air ( :b: ) and not Matter ( :g: ) and not Light. It reared and breathed a spray of blinding light. ( :w: ) Those who could not get out of the way were incinerated :r: ) or driven mad. It was the victor. The corpse of Red Dragon still smoked. It was not a foe to be trifled with.
This creature is virtualy unknown to the majority of the world. In lairs of secluded beuty, they rest. Creatures of Light and wing, things of great beuty. And one Dragon known as Octranium :r: :g: :w: :u: :b:

i don't know if such a creature exists but it would be fun to see it fight.
It would be half red dragon, half human. It is like the warforged barbarian that is in the war drums preveiw 4 from eberron, only that it is a half dragon instead of human.
