I developed a creature that breaks the rules for templating. A thorn (from the MM3) with the feral template (from Savage Species). I know it isn't major, but I thought I'd beef up a thon and see what happened when I mess up the rules. So without further ado, I give you the feral thorn.

A small humanoid-shaped creature thickly garbed in rubbery leaves holds a buckler and grips a thorn-like longsword in its clawed hands. Its skin is dark green and is hair is dark brown. A feral nature seems to be reflected in its eyes.

COMBAT

Feral thorns are more likely to pick fights than their civilized cousins, and are equally as likely to launch a surprise attack as meet a foe head on. It will only attack a foe head on if there are no other opponents nearby.

Sleep Arrows (Ex): Feral thorns carry the same sleep arrows used by pixies. Any creature struck by one of these arrows, regardless of Hit Dice, must make a DC 16 Fortitude save or be affected as though by a sleep spell. The save DC is Charisma based and includes a +2 racial bonus.
Sneak Attack (Ex): A feral thorn can sneak attack as a rogue, gaining an extra 2d6 points of damage on a successful sneak attack.
Improved Grab (Ex): If a feral thorn hits a Tiny or smaller creature with a claw attack, it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Alternatively, it has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use its claw to hold the opponent (-20 on grapple check, but the feral thorn is not considered grappled). In either case, each successful grapple check made in successive rounds automatically deals claw damage.
Pounce (Ex): If a feral thorn leaps upon a foe during the first round of combat, it can make a full attack even though it has already moved.
