| Tav_Behemoth10-29-04, 05:01 PM | OK, so a human with 5' reach can strike the adjacent squares with a non-reach weapon, and can strike the second ring of squares (but not the first) with a reach weapon. In this case, the diagonal doesn't count as two squares -- so the ring of squares threatened is a perfect square. What happens when a giant with 10' natural reach uses a reach weapon? My assumption was that it doesn't threaten the first two rings of squares, but that it does threaten the next two. However, letting it strike 4 diagonals away seemed pretty extreme. Anyone know if this issue has been addressed anywhere? |

The size scale changes, a 5-ft. square becomes a 10 ft. square, and the square count stays the same. IIRC, around the time 3.5 came out, there was this big discussion about the meritis of a spiked chain-wielding ogre... |

My assumption was that it doesn't threaten the first two rings of squares, This is correct. but that it does threaten the next two. Remember that a 10ft reach is an exception to the normal rules for counting distance through diagonals. To see if you can strike a square in this case, see if it is at 10 ft of less from some square of the second ring around the giant, this time counting diagonals normally. So you won't threaten 4 diagonals but 3 (minus the first two). This is explained in the DMG. |

If it was a standard Large reach weapon instead, he would not threaten the first ring of squares, but would threaten the second and third. (Keep in mind that Huge reach weapons are standard for Large size creatures). Reach and weapon size changes are discussed in the Arms and Equipment Guide and in Savage Species (although SS makes the important point that a Tiny creature with a Small reach weapon effectively has five feet of reach, and thus can attack adjacent squares without entering them and provoking an attack of opportunity). |
