I'm working on a campaign, and I'd like to have Catfolk be the raging barbarians of the world. I'd also like them to have mounts to ride. I like the Lion, statwise, but it actually goes slower than a Catfolk Barbarian with fast movement. Would it be unbalancing to give them 60' speed instead of 40'? What would I have to take away to keep them balanced? I don't want to get much above the CR3 that they already have.

How about taking away Pounce? Would that help any?

Well you could advance the lions a bit, and I think Savage Species might have an increased movement feat. Then give the lions that movement feat after advancing them enough to get a new feat.

Or you could have them mount dinosaurs of some sort... how cool would that be? Catfolk mounted on Fast dinosaurs.

Dire Cheetah might work.

Forgotten Realms fiddled with horses a ton in Champions of Valor. Why do all lions have to be the same? Perhaps the lions raised as mounts for the catfolk are bred especially for speed, and are naturally faster than standard lions. Just make their speed as fast as you want, and say they are special lions.

I could do that, but I don't want them to be too powerful and I'm worried that the speed increase might make them so.

Are there stats for a Dire Cheetah anywhere?

A Dire Puma from Sandstorm makes an excellent mount.

I'll check it out, thanks!

Also remember as a mount, most of the time it will be making double moves, charging, or running.

Good point.

I don't like the Dire Puma. It looks like a nice critter, but it doesn't fit the area (Climb 20' on the plains??)

I might go with lions, but I found a dire cheetah on another forum that I'll go with. 80' speed and trip suit the feel that I'm going for perfectly, even if they are one CR higher than I really wanted.

You also should look at the warmount template from MMII, it effectively makes a trained group of them for you to use.

You could just invent your own, something like the Feline version of a Worg.
