| the_poison_elf08-31-06, 07:33 PM | So here we are. Nothing too special, but I hope the simple inclusion here will get a smile from someone. Cybermen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybermen), if you're unfamiliar with the name, are one of the main antagonists in the Dr. Who series. Originally a race of humanoids that decided that cybernetic upgrades was the wave fo the future. More recently a race that is willing to "upgrade" all of humanity, whether they want it or not. This is just meant to be a base cyberman. Cyber-Controllers and the like are for another times. I'm unsure of the challenge rating on them, but they should probably be used in a situation where the players are fairly overmatched to beguin with. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/33/Cyberman2006.jpg Cyberman Size/Type: Medium Construct Hit Dice: 6d10 +20 (50hp) Initiative: +0 Speed: 20ft Armor Class: 20 (+10 natural); Touch 10, FF 20 Base A./G.: +4/+8 Attack: Slam +8 (2d8+4) Full Attack: Slam +8 (2d8+4) Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft. Treasure: None Alignment: Always lawful neutral Advancement: None Level Adjust: - Cybermen range in hight from norman human size to a more imposing 7 feet tall. They are encased in a silver metal armor and lack any distinguishing characteristics or emotion-describing features. Different "versions" have varrying apprearances, but all cybermen from one group will generally look identical. Occasionally thier appearance changes through "upgrades," but there are also cybermen that have been designated for special purposes or administrative roles. Cybermen can communicate in any spoken language that they encounter. Combat Cybermen are as willing to engage in battle as they are to take willing prisoners. Any opponents that do not surrender will be deleted. Cybermen engage in group tactics and subterfuge, but do not rely on any special tactics in combat and instead prefer force of numbers and firepower. Cybermen are proficient with simple and martial weapons, using them if the situation requires. Damage Reduction 10/Gold (Ex): Cybermen are resiliant to most forms of damage, but are very vulnerable to gold. Gold weapons cause massive damage to thier systems. A cyberman is also vulnerable to the Glitterdust spell, taking 2d6 damage per round within the spell's range of effect. It is also considered dazed (taking a -2 penalty to all rolls, saves and checks) until the spells expiration, or until the gold dust is removed. Delete (Su): A cyberman can forgo it's normal slam damage and instead make a touch attack dealing a maximized 10d6 or electricity damage to the target. Fragmentation Ray (Su): As a standard action a cyberman can fire a weapon mounted into it's body as a ranged touch attack. This attack does 4d6 damage and has no range incriment. |
| Insane Pixie08-31-06, 07:43 PM | HP should be 53 (5.5 x 6 = 33, +20 bonus = 53). Other than that and the incredibly high slam damage, it looks mechanically sound. But, how does it fit into D&D? Shouldn't this be on the d20 Future or Modern boards? |
| Radijs08-31-06, 07:44 PM | Well now this is a hard baby to pin down. The AC, HP and att. bonus tell me that its about CR 5ish. But then you bring up the touch attack which does a straight 60 damage no save which could up its CR quite a bit to around say 9? Best guess. The DR 10/gold is a little strange since it doesn't ocurr anywhere else in the game. I'd go for 10/adamantine purely for simplicity's sake. The fragmentation ray doesn't specify a range only that there are no range increments. Its a construct right now, I'd change it to a living construct. It makes some more sense flavour wise and you won't have to deal with the normal construct traits which deals with immunity to magic(Ex). Just my initial thoughts. |
| the_poison_elf08-31-06, 07:46 PM | But, how does it fit into D&D? Shouldn't this be on the d20 Future or Modern boards? That's the good thing with a source that allows for both time-travel and dimensional hopping. ;) |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.09-01-06, 10:58 AM | I think the DR makes fine sense, and there is some precedent (wolf-weres have DR/gold). However, you've flamingoed up many aspects of the creatures. Dazed means no actions at all. I think you mean dazzled, -1 penalty to attack (or my version, -1 to attack, AC, spot and search), and neither of those is a -2 penalty to a bunch of things. I'd also take it down to DR5/gold, unless they're all but physically invulnerable to non-gold weapons in the show. The Delete power should have a more appropriate name, like deathshock or charged touch. What kind of damage does the frag ray deal? Fire? Light? Disintegration? Teleportation? Specify. Describe it a little. Always Lawful Neutral seems inappropriate. Maybe LE would befit them more? |
| SquirrelMortis09-01-06, 12:52 PM | Please, please, please, make a dalek! I so want to surprise the PCs. EXTERMINATE! |
| the_poison_elf09-01-06, 02:03 PM | I think the DR makes fine sense, and there is some precedent (wolf-weres have DR/gold). Well, cybermen are highly "allergic" to gold. Gold dust is pretty much poison if it gets into thier system, and gold weapons were shown to be highly effective. Old series, that is; the new one actually makes mention of that flaw being from an older version. However, you've flamingoed up many aspects of the creatures. Dazed means no actions at all. I think you mean dazzled, -1 penalty to attack (or my version, -1 to attack, AC, spot and search), and neither of those is a -2 penalty to a bunch of things. I'd also take it down to DR5/gold, unless they're all but physically invulnerable to non-gold weapons in the show. well, an assault rifle does nothing to them. in fact, the new show only has one normal-human-weapon doing anything to them: a bazooka. the EMP used, though farily "normal" by our standards, is closer to being a magical item in game terms. i'll fix up the dazed/dazzled bit. The Delete power should have a more appropriate name, like deathshock or charged touch. What kind of damage does the frag ray deal? Fire? Light? Disintegration? Teleportation? Specify. Describe it a little. I checked the wiki entry to see if any names were listed for thier weaponry, but no. The closest listed was "cyber-gun" for thier hand-held weapons in previous shows. Because of that I figured that "Delete" was as good a name as any, and just stayed on topic for "Fragment" (as in "De-Fragment"). Energy type... hard to say. I'd probably go with a force effect but that effects too broad of a range of creatures. Barring that I'd probably go with fire (the closest analog for a lazer in this case). Always Lawful Neutral seems inappropriate. Maybe LE would befit them more? I never really got Cybermen as "evil," per say. Especially in the new show, they're far from malignant beings. What they do is seen as abhorant, but it's not done for any abhorant reasons. Lawful is a must, but then I say that they could range into Evil (Such as a Cybercontroller) or even Good (the lone rogue seen in the new series). I think a Dalek seems like a fiiiiine idea. :D |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.09-01-06, 08:04 PM | Actually, Light is the best lazer-type effect. It's an unsung damage type, not really listed, but I've worked out some stuff that interacts with it, and it goes along with other light effects, like a crystal dragon's breath weapon or a lantern archon's light rays. The EMP, even if advanced enough to seem magic, doesn't mean it's magic. Alchemical items and zero-gravity areas on the planes are not supressed in anti-magic fields. If you make everything so strange and complex as to be "seems like magic" magic, then Electric Eels and animals with hallucinatory venom would have to be magical beasts, and life itself might be a "magic" effect. |
| the_poison_elf09-02-06, 12:12 AM | Ok, ok. I hadn't bothered to mention "alchemical" EMPs, though I had thought of it. Though even making acid requires you to be a spellcaster. ;) Not that I agree with that. :P |
| Kel09-04-06, 10:25 PM | Ah...Daleks... must be epic challenge rating. At least |
| Yue Ryong09-05-06, 07:35 AM | Hm... more like CR 18+. They're not that powerful individually. but they're powerful enough that an army of them becomes more or less unstoppable. |
| the_poison_elf09-06-06, 09:20 PM | Ah...Daleks... must be epic challenge rating. At least Ryong Hm... more like CR 18+. They're not that powerful individually. but they're powerful enough that an army of them becomes more or less unstoppable. What he said. A lone Dalek really isn't the worst possibility; I imagine that a 6th+ level combat mage could take a single one out (assuming he/she could avoid getting hit in return). There are plenty of examples of daleks getting taken out with single shots from powerful weapons; it's largely the fact that if it dosn't kill it in one hit then it isn't likely to kill it at all [see the confrontation in Doomsday, new season 2]. Hiiiigh damage reduction and armor class, but a rather low con/hit points. Tommorow I'll work on both a Dalek in battlearmor and the Dalek itself. |
