Dark Creeper/Stalker [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-30-03, 07:47 PM I've been reading through Dungeon Magazine's Adventure Path: Shackled City, anxious to run some players through it, and I had a monster related question first.

There's mention of the dark creepers and dark stalker, but it doesn't reference which book they're from (Monster Manual, Monster Manual II, or Fiend Folio). It also doesn't have any (to my knowledge) pictures of them.

I was hoping someone could tell me which book they're from so I can surf to the Artwork section of the D&D website and download some pictures. Hope someone can help me out with this. And as always, game on!

08-30-03, 09:08 PM They're in the Fiend Folio and the Tome of Horrors. The Fiend Folio is the official D&D version, but I prefer the ToH type (they explode when killed, among other things).

05-01-04, 02:27 PM Having played a Dark Stalker in a few campaigns, I've found that the Fiend Folio doesn't tell you much about their actual culture even though they're a really awesome race. That's why I typed up an article about it. It's posted in the general topics area under Races. (the thread itself is called "Dark One Culture") Personally, I find these creatures fascinating and would welcome any thoughts you all have about them.

And since when do they explode when killed?

First editon AD&D. That's where I got the info from when I put them in the Tome of Horrors.

05-01-04, 05:33 PM It is a third party compilation of older edition monsters that didn't make it into the MM. You can find the convertions online at the Creature Catalog (http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/). On the right side of the page you'll find a pic and link to the Tome of Horrors.

Sorta yeah. The Tome of Horrors contains over 400 monsters, both conversions and 100% original/new stuff. As was mentioned, a lot of the conversions can still be found in the Creature Catalog. However, the ones in the Tome are cleaned up, and in some cases different (and with regards to the unique demons and devils...a lot different). Plus, the Tome 1 contains some additional conversions that aren't on (and won't be on) the Creature Catalog site.

Best of all, the Tome 1 is 100% OGC (including all monster names, stats, text, etc.). Second best of all, at the end of each monster entry (the conversions anyway) is a Section 15 Copyright notice that lists the monsters original source as well as original author. We thought it would be cool to recognize the guy(s) who did the original work.

Tome 1 is outta stock now (meaning no copies in the warehouse) but you can probably still find it in the retail chains or online resellers (or even on EBay most likely).
