| dorpond01-06-04, 01:32 PM | The poison make you "lapse into a nightmare haunted sleep for 2D4 minutes". The rules state that you can slap or damage a player to wake them up from the SLEEP spell. Would that hold true to this poison also or would they be in that state for 2D4 minutes not matter what? This IS a poison and NOT a spell, that is why I ask. Also, when a player gets poisoned like this, would they fall down also? Thanks |
| cwslyclgh01-06-04, 02:05 PM | it is not a sleep spell, and the character would remain asleep for the 2d4 minutes, regarldess of poking, proding, slapping... or biting by the dark naga. however a nuetrilze poison spell should wake them. Also, when a player gets poisoned like this, would they fall down also? most likly, I know of very few people who sleep standing up. in close quartes they might justslump against a nearby wall or something though. |

Is that your opinion or fact? Can you give me evidence in the PHB/DMG/MM or SRD? Thanks |

It's a game, not everything is explicity spelled out in the rules. Some things are left up to the DM's discretion, and rightly so. No the answer you're looking for is not explicity spelled out in any of the books. The Sleep spell states what happens when you slap someone under the effects of the spell, but only that particular spell. The Dark Naga poison says you fall into a nightmare filled sleep for 2d4 minutes. It doesn't say if you can be woken up prior to that. So if you're looking for a rule in the book, there it is, you fall into a nightmare filled sleep for 2d4 minutes and that's it. In general, if there is a way to reverse a condition imposed by a poison/spell/curse/disease etc than it is spelled out in the description of the poison/spell/curse/disease. In this case it doesn't say, therefore you suffer the effects of the poison and that's it. |

The reason I ask is because I CAN see my players trying to fight me on this. I CAN see a total hell hole experience and if one of them did die, I would have to hear it every day, for a full week until the next session and even then I would hear about it when they are resurrecting or rolling a new character.. Plain and simple, it states that a magically induced Sleep like the one in the SLEEP spell can be removed by damaging or slapping the victim. It is common sense for one to ask if the same happens for ALL sleeping characters no matter the cause of the sleep. |
| quaiven01-07-04, 01:26 AM | It is common sense for one to ask if the same happens for ALL sleeping characters no matter the cause of the sleep. No. The Sleep spell puts you into a peaceful slumber, just as if you had fallen asleep normally and therefore can be woken up normally. The Dark Naga Poison puts you into a "narcotic" induced nightmare filled sleep, as if you were on a bad acid trip. Look at it this way. When you're in a classroom and the teacher is droning on and on and one of your friends falls asleep, just a tap on the shoulder is all you need to wake him up. But when the same friend gets falling down drunk later on that night, there is no way to wake him until the "poison" alchohol has run its course. The reason I ask is because I CAN see my players trying to fight me on this. Sorry about this, I've had to deal with it to. But simply explain to them that in the absence of a written rule, you have license to fill in the blank spots whichever way you see fit. You're the DM. That's your job. Explain to them that everywhere in the rules, whenever a condition such as sleep/paralysis/fear etc is imposed by a spell/poison etc there is always a way to reverse the condition in the description of the spell/poison, if there is no reversal in the description, than there is simply no reversal. The spell/poison etc runs its course and you deal with the consequences. I'm sorry if I came off as a jerk, but if you don't stand up to your players, then you are either going to a: Have no fun or b: Turn into a Monty Hall to avoid having to deal with their anger whenever things dont go their way. |
