You see a creature that stands just under a foot tall. It has light gray skin and small wings sticking from its shoulder blades. Its mouth is at the end of a short snout and a few small but sharp-looking teeth can be seen within. The creature’s hands have three clawed fingers that are raised and ready to attack.

The Lesser Servants of Syn were created by their dark lord to be messengers and spies. They are good for little else. What they lack in physical strength they do not make up for in intelligence. Truthfully, their only advantage is their quickness and even that is nothing compared to some larger creatures.

Lesser Servants of Syn speak Infernal.

Combat
The Lesser Servants of Syn are rarely forced into combat. When they are they don’t usually survive long and are relatively ineffectual. They try to avoid combat by sneaking around while in dangerous places. When this fails they try to jump onto their enemy and claw at them until they see an opportunity to escape.

Assuming that "Servant of Syn" means that they serve a being named "Syn," do you have any information on Syn?
Black Jack Davey

The Lesser Servants of Syn do, obviously, serve a being called Syn. This will all be part of a campaign I will be starting sometime in the near future.

Exact information isn't really relevant to this creature, or the other similar ones I will eventually post. That information is rather conceptual at the moment anyway, and may change. Just think of him as a devil whose power rivals that of the very Lords of Hell.

I see. If you wanted a more "concrete" version of Syn, one whose powers are slightly (;)) greater than that of the Lords of the 9, she's here (http://3edb.com/viewCharacter.asp?cid=5296).

The creature itself, however - I think it's really balanced. Its abundance of special qualities more than make up for its lack of combat skill, which coincides perfectly with your description. :)

Thanks. I worked on this one for a while. I wanted a devil that I could introduce early in the campaign without slaughtering the PCs.

I will have more coming, too. This one is just the begining. More followers of Syn will be coming soon, as well as some of his enemies.

Ah well - good luck with your campaign. :)

Thank you. And good luck with your Syn's easy domination of the multiverse.

This is actually kinda cool. Excellent foes for any level of PCs. I could see using them against Higher Level PC's just to annoy them....
Black Jack Davey

...and very annoying they would be. You could even create a swarm-type creature with these.

Does this seem balanced to everyone?

Maybe increase their CR to 2.
Black Jack Davey

08-08-04, 11:24 PM
Change their CR to 2? Why? They don't seem at all powerful enough to be CR 2. Does this little devil really look like the equivalent of a bugbear to you?

Thanks for the input but I think that if the CR should be changed at all, it should be lowered. But, at least for now, I will keep it's CR at 1.

Quite like it, although I do not understand the fly speed... Sorry if I am being to rational about this, but it seems that this fella has s much trouble staying in the air, that it would cause him more energy then that he would get in return :) I would suggest a fly speed of 20 ft. Mmmm?

And I had some consistancy questions:

It seems to me like the main attack should be +3, 1 bab and 2 dex.
It also seems to me that he should have two claw attacks?
Since his bite attack is secundary, I think it should be at a -2 penalty.
Since it is a tiny outsider, maybe the claw damage should read 1d2-1. that way, when it receives, say, a bull's strentgh, it will read 1d2+1.
And Bite damage, on avarage, for a tiny outsider, is 1d3. But offcourse it might have slightly sharper teeth, so I guess 1d4 is cool too, just thought I would mention it. So that would make it 1d4-1, indeed.
Maybe you should mention avg HP (4) ?
Either change size to small, or Face/Reach to 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 ft. / 0 ft.
Maybe lower challenge rating to 1/2
Maybe include SR 8

Hopefully not to harsh on you, just thought I would set it more to WotC standards? :)

Dearest Regards,

No offense, but why doesn't Syn just use imps?

They're more common, and they're better in every way.

It is not about being better, it is about story. He needs devils, not just one type, for his low level party that have a unique flavour. I think he's done it!

One other thing: May I add one to the list: The Advocate of Syn?
Black Jack Davey

08-09-04, 12:55 PM
Would your idea be for an advocate?

And thank you very much for the WotC standards. I tried to follow, but that's what I was missing.

The bite damage is 1d3...

And maybe I'm just not thinking but...SR 8? What's that mean?
Black Jack Davey

In regards to the servant flying: it can't fly well. It more jumps and tries to stay in the air.

SR : Spell Resistance.

As for advocate: I thought of a small devil turning up when the diplomat emmisary is contaradicted in his statement of one or another thing. Then this guy appears and starts defending the player, telling the emmisary that the player is right. After he has defended the player, he starts defending the emissary instead, breaking all the good points he had just made for the player, making the player guilty, or something like that, which might work as: Odds are against him, so that in a battle a bane or prayer effect is against him, suffering - to attack, saves, skill checks adn, maybe, damage???

I'm a little confused by your idea. Could you clarify? Or even better, e-mail me (or IM me) at istirith@yahoo.com and we could dicuss it further.

Thank you again for all of your help. I'm unsure about the SR. Do you think that would help balance the creature?
Black Jack Davey

Ok, I'll take that as a no. Anyone else have anything to say about this wonderful little devil before it enters my game?

Sorry, been away and I am quite busy momentarily... SR is just Devil flavour, and a little obstacle to overcome if the SR is not very high.
