dead player and Charnel Hound help [Archive] - Wizards Community

One of my players had their body integrated by a Charnel Hound (mm3). Basically what this does is the undead creature - a hound of death huge sized standing over 20 feet tall and made from hundreds of humanoid corpses - literally sucks the life and body of the character and incorperates it into the hound's body, in essence adding it to the 100s of corpses which already make up its body.

Now here is the tricky part. Another character has a psionic equivalent of raise dead, but it only works one round after the target dies. The Party did kill the hound in the same round as the character died, so in theory if they could find the corpse of this character then the psionic raise dead would work.

The MM3 entry remarks that it is difficult to find an integrated corpse and, even if the remaining characters looked, the hound was 20 feet tall and weighed over 35,000 pounds. What are the chances of them finding this one particular corpse in the one round they need for psionic raise dead to work?

I am the DM and I say slim to none (with closer to the later being the truth) but the player is intent on saving their character and I have the feeling this issue wont go away quietly.

Some advice or a realistic die roll percentage would be appreciated.

You are just going to have to put your foot down. I would suggest rolling a d%. On a roll of 100, they find it. Considering that more than 100 bodies make up the Charnel Hound, those are nice odds. It sucks to have a character die, but sometimes it happens. Now they will just have to find the money for a Raise Dead spell. That just means more adventuring :).

EDIT: Also, if it is really that important to the player, the Psion can just spend more experience to increase the rounds he has before finding the body. The power in the XPH says he can pay an extra 100 XP for each round he wants to extend it to. So, if he wants to chance it, they can look for the body and Revivify it. But if like 10 rounds pass, he is paying an extra 1000 XP (although I think he splits it with the dead person).

If it works as raise dead then they are out of luck because it won't work on formerly undead creatures. That is the kind of thing that I sometimes "forget" ;)

I would just call it a DC 25 search check, myself, with only one of the squares it formerly occupied holding the corpse (just randomly roll for which one). That meams that the party would have to spend 18 minutes to take 20 on the whole pile of corpses (not that bad, considering). Smart thinking can get them to it faster, though. Detect magic is likely to find that character's gear in 3 rounds (assuming that your party has stupidly stood in the way when the wizard used detect loot before).

Yep, detect magic was the fastest way I thought of. The problem is that they only have a stone of psionic revivity and not the actual power.

It looks like they are going to have to get lucky with a die roll. Thanks.

Detect Object, a 1st level cleric spell.

In the round, the psion readies an action for the cleric to point at the right body; the cleric then casts Detect Object (my firend's corpse, or something he was carrying) and identifies which one.

The precise spell descriptions might make this plan impossible.

If as you say and the other charactor killed the Charnal Hound in the same round that the hound killed the player, I would not think that the body would be fully integrated into the hound as yet, so would be easier to find just past the maw.
