| The Abominable Darkling07-10-05, 01:44 AM | I'd just reskin a light horse. |
| BelRex07-10-05, 11:11 AM | The deer and elk were stated in the Silver Marches book for forgotten realms on page 119. I would post it(mainly because it's just an animal) but it's not part of the SRD. Other than that, I'm not sure if it's anywhere else. |
| Fiery_Overlord07-10-05, 01:11 PM | I would restat a donkey for a deer and mule for elk. (hourses are not as rugged for a wild animal that often live in mountainous regions) If we are talking stags during the season with antlers Replace attack (bite) with antlers (2d4 + Modifer), other wise use a hooves attack because biting deer is wierd. I would also read up on deer hunting because likely the player would really enjoy encounters that reflect actual hunting encounters. (field and stream is a good source) Also deer hunting provides many oportunities for throwing in adventure hooks, first if you are using a medevil model for your society potching is a serious crime. Hunting was often an activity of royalty, assuming the character is granted rights to hunt as a reward (or through bribery) there still are many avenues to add adventure hooks to those wandering into the woods, like stumbling across some half buried ruins, or chance encounters with fey. Depending on his motivations, (like for sport but donating the meat to the poor) this adds a lot a flavor the campaign. |
| stranger-65407-10-05, 10:37 PM | Thanks for that, i will have a happy player now, :D The Idea of swaping the stats for a donkey with a deer is very good, i would never have thought of that, prolly why i came here Anyway, Thanks for that guys, and thanks for the suggested reading. |
| Aeolius07-10-05, 11:34 PM | remember...not all deer are the same... ;) http://www.aeolius.com/deercam/session4/session4-Thumbnails/77.jpg |
| ksbsnowowl07-11-05, 10:00 AM | Actually, the stats for a Deer in Silver Marches are closest to those of a Pony.remember...not all deer are the same... Ah, but the stats of all single-entry creatures are those for an average, adult individual. Ergo, you little visualization proves little. It is true however that there is great diversity in size within a single species throughout different climes. Typically the larger individuals of a species (ie-Dire Animals) are found in colder, more northerly (or southerly) locations. This has to do with maintaining body heat and the relationship of mass to surface area (a larger body mass generates more body heat, while a proportionately smaller surface area means a smaller percentage of body heat is lost due to exposure.) An apt example is with white-tailed deer. Adult individuals in Florida can be as short as 4 feet, while those in Canada easily top 6 or 7 feet. |
| ajmastrean07-12-05, 09:42 AM | DC 10 survival/track to hunt and kill a deer provided the terrain/climate/whatever is appropriate for having deer around. Takes 2 hours to hunt/kill/clean/whatever...and for every 5 above the DC, -10 minutes. |
| Aeolius07-12-05, 10:03 AM | Ergo, you little visualization proves little. Awww....but the little Bambis are so cuuuuuttteee! ;) (photo taken in my own backyard, no less) For a more interesting hunt, slap some templates on the deer. Perhaps a half-dragon (green) stag or a gelatinous elk, not to mention what the monstrous beast, ghost brute, or umbral templates might accomplish. Gives the deer a sporting chance. :D Or try something traditional; a hunt for a white stag leads the party into a faerie realm. |
| blackknightatbay07-12-05, 11:52 AM | I have an annoying player who wants to hunt deer, and i was wondering if any of you have the stats for a similar creature, help would be much welcomed, perhaps with cheering and a feast, but more likely a thanks Guys ill leave it to ya Make it the (almost) uncatchable golden deer from the Hercules legend. I doubt your player is as tough as Herc, so it could go on forever (which is admittedly one of the drawbacks), but it might be fun to see how long he'd continue to try to catch it. |
| BelRex07-12-05, 01:31 PM | Or you could just superimpose the phantom stag(complete divine, druid5) spell onto a deer. You would definately have trouble with that. |
