Jeremy W. 01-28-07, 02:35 PM	This might seem like a really stupid question, but what are some ways (creative or otherwise) to defeat a Basilisk? I'm sure we could fight with our eyes down, generally aware of where the beast is, and take penalties and still occasionally hit, but beyond that obvious stance?

primemover003 01-28-07, 03:36 PM	Use ranged weapons. Stay out of the beasts Gaze range and kill it with spells and arrows, bolts, javelins, whatever. Put it in an entangle or grease spell to keep it in one spot and engage from range. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.
Whisper_Swiftblade 01-28-07, 03:46 PM	throw a cape covered in glue at its face, if it's eyes are covered no more gaze. summon something that wont be effected by the gaze. use buffs so that your will is too high for the gaze to be a problem. suprise it and hit it with eveything you have before it get's a chance to fight back. blindfold yourself and be glad you took blind-fight. darkness spell and be glad for blind-fight. smokestick and be glad for blind-fight. fight in an anti-magic area.

We took out the Half-Black Dragon Dracolisk by chucking a 10-by-10 foot square of sail-cloth over it's eyes after liberally coating it with Sovereign Glue...ended up nearly clawing it's own eyes out...and didn't notice our much-beloved pairing of a Wee Jas worshiping Cleric with the Magic Domain and our slightly-crazy Evocationer popping a half-dozen Delayed Fireball spells under it as the rest of the party yelled and screamed to make it's listen DC horribly high....Crispy Critter time.... Seriously, the Basilisk's greatest threat is it's petrifying gaze. Slap a Darkness on it's head, put Blindsight (a mere level 2 spell from Savage Species that grants the Blindsight special ability) on your fighter or main melee type (Don't forget he/she/it has basically 50% more Hit-points now the Basilisk cannot see, and thus suffers a 50% miss chance.) Alternatively, get the basilisk to follow after you and litter the ground with caltrops while your rogue hides somewhere...if the Rogue can get a single decent sneak attack in and run away, the Basilisk, being a very slow-witted beast, is going to turn around and head towards this new threat, presenting it's backside to a arrow or three and perhaps a bit of magical hurt? Another alternative, if one of the party is willing to risk it, a vial of Thever Fumes could make a group of Basilisks a sub-threat with it's DC of 18....a Inhaled Poison, but considering it costs a whopping 3000 gold for a single use item, it might be overkill. Still, if you have pacifist (called 'sissies' by those of evil alignment, 'exalted' by those of good), the Thever Fumes deal no ability damage, but the blindness is permanent.
