Anyone else think that the 3.5ED Demilich is ruined?
The previous versions were sort of cool ... more of a terrain hazard than a monster, and it looks to me like lot of the flavour has leeched out in the new version.
Of course it would have been nearly impossible to CR the old version ... after all, you could just walk around it and it would do absolutely zip.

What previous version are you talking about? In BG2, the demilich was a skull that was magic immune and could cast imprisonment all day. ;)

Well, the 3.5 version is a lot like that, though its not nearly as hard to kill(its dr was severely reduced) thanks to its crappy HD, though its trap the soul dc is still scary as it is directly based off HD(not 1/2HD). Throw in an epic warding spell for the few vulnerabilities it has...

I have no idea. Even in 2e, walking into a demilichs chamber would result in it trapping your soul as soon as it could.

IIRC, in 1E, the demilich only attacked if you disturbed it. If ya didnt mess with it, it didnt do anything (if im remembering correctly). Have to look back in my MM2 to find out..but I think that's how it worked.

Technically, it wasn't a goal. Liches naturally deteriorated, and becoming a demilich was the only way to prevent them from dying forever. During that time, their mind roamed the planes. It was implied that something even more dreadful came after the demilich stage.
