| DeathLich03-26-04, 03:34 PM | Could someone please tell me the castes/levels of authority and power for demons and devils. thanks alot |
| Freefall03-26-04, 03:44 PM | For the most part they are the same as the order of CR. For Devils, Pit Fiends are at the top of the pecking order. Next to the Pit Fiends are the Gelugons (even though now in 3.5 they are weaker than Cornugons; don't know why that happened). Cornugons rank below Gelugons. After that I think it might be Hamatula. Osyluths have a different kind of authority. They are like policemen and can charge other devils with breaking laws, but I don't think they can really give orders. Erinyes are probably right below these two. They used to be special infiltration agents, but now they seem to be aerial attackers. Barbazu make up the rank and file foot soldiers. Demons don't have as obvious a hierarchy. Balors are definitely at the top, followed by Mariliths. Nalfeshnee I think come next; they are basically judges that sentence those who have died and gone to the Abyss, and those who have broken abyssal law (whatever that means). From there I think it basically goes right in order of power, so Glabrezu, Hezrou, Vrock, etc. This basically just means that most individual vrocks might do what a Glabrezu says because it's smart, not because they actually feel obligated to do so. In Planescape there was a city on the first layer of the Abyss where a Succubus was the highest ranking demon there because she's managed to hold onto her position that long. |

| Mirtek03-27-04, 10:32 AM | Get yourself a copy of the 2e Planescape supplement Faces of Evil: The Fiends. The PDF version is avaible for only $5 online. This book is 100 page pure fluff. Not a single rule, but all about personality, society, laws, languages, castes and authority levels of the major fiendish races: Tanar'Ri, Baatezu, and Yugoloths. It also has some quick summaries about the other races on the lower planes, Hordlings, Bodaks, Larvae, Night Hags, Shadow Fiends, Tieflings, Imps and Quasits. This is the most detailed work on the background of the fiends |
| Brian.C03-27-04, 01:40 PM | Devils have a rigid caste system much like what Freefall explained. The demons have NO heirarchy. In the Abyss, whoever is the strongest rules. Granted, that usually means that the balors, mariliths, and nalfeshnee are in charge, but basically, any demon with enough power and/or influence can rule an area, at least until re or she is overthrown by someone stronger. In other words, Baator has a formal government (albeit an evil one), but the Abyss is pretty much anarchy. It's all due to the nature of the fiends. If the tanar'ri ever set up any formal government and organized themselves, they'd quickly win the Blood War. That's how much they outnumber the baatezu. Fortuanately, they can't, and never will. - Brian |
| Freefall03-27-04, 09:27 PM | I always forget about the Amnizu. Never cared much for them. I guess they just never really struck me as being a worthy addition to Baatezu society, so I just tend to forget them. Now the Molydeus were great. Too bad they haven't been reincarnated in 3E yet (to my knowledge anyway; if they have, someone please mention which book). |
