In 3.5 is there any supporting evidence to whether a Demon can be killed in the Prime Material Plane, or is he simply banished as in earlier editions? Anyone?

it depends on how it got to the material plane... if it was summoned with a conjuration [summoning] spell, or with the summoning ability of another demon, then it is not realy on the material plane, and is simply sent back to its plane of origin if "killed" here. If it came though the use of an inter planar portal, or through the use of a conjuration [calling] spell then the demon is realy present is dies if slain.

By the Rules as Written, what was said earlier. Previous editions had those that were killed slowly reform back on their home plane if killed off of that home plane, with specific types of fiends only capable of being permenantly killed on specific planes. 3e has either simplified or dumbed this down (depending on your perspective) and the RAW don't make any distinction between where they are killed, only if they are there or are summoned.

Of course if the older, more detailed material, strikes your imagination, by all means go and use it (as I do). :)

However, it typically took a fiend who was "slain" a really long time (as in, somewhere between 100-1000 years) to pull himself back together, so even if he wasn't actually killed, it's not something that the PCs are likely to have to deal with.

Shemeska's assessment is also some what simplistic, and infact is not valid across all previous editions... in 1st edition for example only greater/major demons, devils, daemons (and lord types) would reform if slain on a plane other then thier plane of origin, lesser/minor forms were realy slain if killed on the material plane no matter how they got here.

When I said 'previous editions' I was mostly referring to the wealth of planar material from 2e. I've maybe picked up one or two 1st ed books, and really nothing before that. Keep in mind I didn't play till 3e. Given the 2e material, my statement stands. *shrug*
