| KublaiKhan03-16-06, 05:35 PM | Since I'm on an undead kick as of late [ see my Dead Man Walking (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=604782) for the last example ] I submit for your reading pleasure: The Derelict On Duty The Derelict on Duty is the animated body of a sailor who has died while out at sea, through starvation, thirst, or other similar causes. The Derelict on Duty is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid corporeal creature, hereafter designated the "base creature". Size and Type The Derelict on Duty retains the size of the base creature. The type changes to "Undead", and subtype to "Aquatic". Hit Dice The Derelict on Duty retains half the hit dice of the base creature, rounded up, raised to d12's. Speed The Derelict on Duty retains the speed of the base creature, and gains a swim speed of half the base creature's land speed, [ or the base creature's swim speed, whichever is better ]. The Derelict on Duty loses any flying or burrowing speeds. Armor Class The Derelict on Duty gains +2 natural armor because of the salt-laden environment tanning its flesh. This is added to the base creature's natural armor, if any. Base Attack The Derelict on Duty has a Base Attack Bonus equal to 3/4 of his hit dice. Attacks The Derelict on Duty retains all the natural weapons, manufactured weapon attacks, and weapon proficiencies of the base creature. The Derelict also gains a bite attack. Damage Natural and manufactured weapons deal damage normally. The bite attack deals damage according to the size of the base creature. Special Attacks Sea Fever[su]: The Derelict on Duty's bite carries Sea Fever, a supernatural disease requiring a DC 15 fortitude save to resist. Incubation for Sea Fever is one week. It causes d6 int damage/day, as well as preventing natural or magical healing, until the victim's int score reaches 0 [ manifesting as a high fever ]; at that point, the victim must make a fortitude save at DC 20, or die. Victims who die of Sea Fever rise as Derelicts on Duty at the next midnight. Sea Fever requires a Lesser Restoration, Restoration, or Greater Restoration to cure; after that, ability and hit point damage may be healed as normal. Special Qualities Famished[ex]: Due to their emaciated frames, Derelicts on Duty are treated as one size smaller for the purposes of Bull Rush attempts. Rations[su]: By consuming a pound of flesh from a creature that has been dead less than an hour, the Derelict on Duty may heal d6 hitpoints. Saves Base save bonuses are Fort +1/3 HD, Ref +1/3 HD, and Will +1/2 HD + 2. Abilities The Derelict on Duty has no constitution score. Its strength score is adjusted by +2, and charisma by -2. Intelligence is reduced to d4+2. Skills The Derelict on Duty's class skills are Hide and Move Silently. It loses all skills that the base creature had. It has a racial +5 bonus to bluff checks made to convince others that it is a delirious sailor suffering from exposure. Feats The Derelict on Duty retains any combat-oriented feats that the base creature had. Environment Any aquatic or littoral area. Organization Solitary, pair, gang [ 3-8 of 1HD + 1 of 5HD ], crew [ 10-25 of 1HD + 4 of 5HD + 1 of 7HD ] Challenge Rating: CR 3 + HD Treasure 1/2 standard, no non-waterproof. Alignment Always Neutral Evil Advancement As base creature, but double Hit Dice (maximum 20), or — if the base creature advances by character class. Level Adjustment -- "Man Overboard!" The sailors hauled the emaciated, salt-streaked man onto the ship, amazed to find anyone so far from land, clinging to so small a piece of wreckage. The man lay still for a moment, until one of the sailors bent down to check if he was still breathing....and then the screaming started. |

| Ravenwillow03-27-06, 02:13 PM | I happen to like Ocean based things quite a bit, so let me say this beasty seems quite interesting.. I especially like the 'salt tanning' bit on their flesh. Now, one 'flavor bit' you might want to add is their tendency to attack those who are, in fact, Derelict on Duty.. If a sailor falls asleep on his watch, or is playing cards or dice with another sailor, they have a tendency to attack those first. *shrugs* Just a thought. |
