Ok everyone I am working on make a new type of dragon, to go with a world I am working on. I have a a friend that is a real good artist and she will be doing the drawings for me. But I want to give it a unique breath weapon(s).

So I am open to ideas So please give me some unique ideas, I will later make a list of the best ones and then will put them back on the forum for a vote.

here are my ideas so far

A cone of zinc fumes

A cone Fluorine gas

A line of Bromine

A cone of Potassium(must also have a line of high pressure water)

A line of Cesium (must also have a line of high pressure water)

A cone of White Phosphorus

A line of tar(asphalt)

First off, you don't need to do a breath weapon at all. Look at the fang dragon for an example. However, if you do want a breath weapon, consider the following:

A breath weapon does not have to be a line or cone. You could do a thin cone, a wide cone, a hemisphere, or a wide line.

Next, you can mix energy types, use unusual energy types (such as dessication or negative energy damage), or add special effects such as stunning or blindness (like the gem dragons).

I like the hot tar breath weapon idea. How about a mercury breath weapon or some kind of radioactive material, that could be nasty with some radiation poisoning as an aftereffect, oh how about a small nuke breath weapon, splits teh atom in his breath weapon chamber and then has some strange magical manner of containing it until he expels it and then when it gets a certain distance from it and its immune to the effects itself.

Theres another thing thats on the tip of my tongue so when I think of it I'll post it.

I have thought about doing the radioactive theme.

But it has a few draw backs

Ok lets talk damage..... You cant do the mini-Abomb it would just be way to powerful. How many dice does an Abomb have anyways.

You could do a low dose weapon that causes radiation sickness, but it could take days or weeks for it to kill the victim(this would be good if the dragons are really cruel).

I love fang dragons, but when I think dragon I think nasty breath weapon

But I am open to dragons without breath weapons, as long as they are just another fang dragon in disguise.

Yeh I get carried away sometimes, I may make that nuke dragon as a prisoner of Carceri or something a mad wizard and a mad scientist teamed up to create in my own campaign. Maybe the radiation could be highly concentrated in a line and then in a cone around the line everybody gets sick and nauseated and then die a week or two later.

Oh I mixed a sunwyrm and a fang dragon one time but never statted it, it was an awesome idea in my opinion and I was gonna have it ravage the party but never got around to it, oh well I still may stat it sometime but feel free to do it yourself.

Its not getting carried away, it is being creative. One of my first ideas was a radiation breath weapon. But when I started to apply it, I ran into the problems with the idea. You could do it witha big nasty epic dragon, make it a higher CR than a prismatic. That way you could use the more destructive breath weapon, but the PC would have to be really high level, 35 +....

Thanks, I suppose looking at it more optimistically it is creativity. I see your point on the radiation breath weapon. My games tend not to have any numbers or crunch except for a little bit of dicerolling, mostly roleplaying and fluff but me and my players like it that way so it works for us.

Anyway back to the topic, how about necrotoxins- a venom or perhaps cloud of gas that would rot the flesh right off, similar to and angel of decays aura in libris mortis; or maybe a cone of various diseases or different toxins, maybe the best and most deadly of all the various kinds of toxins and combine them all into a gas.

How about a cone of molten metal? It could deal fire & maybe bludgenoning damage in addition to encasing the victim in metal. (Maybe a save or they are trapped and start suffocating or are covered in metal Ala flesh to stone?) Or a curse breath weapon that hits victims with a besow curse spell (or a worse varint for the higher age catagories?) Or you could do a polymorph breath weapon that turns targets in frogs or something.
Ramenth

07-14-06, 03:23 PM
Well, you could always do a reverse breath weapon. I.E, draws the heat out of the affected area and then blasts it back, dealing both cold and fire damage.

A cone of nauseating gas, and guess where it comes from? I'll give you a hint, it's technically no longer a "breath" weapon. :P

How about a dragon that shoots a little sphere that explodes upon contact, like a fireball only more dragonish. Or, shoot pure sodium followed by water, for a really big BOOM!
Khael

07-14-06, 05:03 PM
Corruption, pure corruption (a contradiction I know), which basically means a sort of poison/acid/ability drain breath that affects hardnesses probably permanently (In flavour terms, where this thing passes nothing remains, not stone, not steel, not life and nothing will EVER grow there again).

But another good idea is a psyshieking dragon, that attacks the mind with its breath weapon (I.E. inflicts ability damage).

Anyway a cloud of gas that when inhaled causes extreme anemia, making the blood so thin that it pours out of the vessels and then out of the major orfices and eventually the pores of the skin, the look on the PC's faces when one of them gets hit by a cloud of gas and the dragon smiles while the being runs and collapses screaming because his blood is draining from him so fast he has to stay alive and watch it. :evillaugh

I've been toying around with a dragon that breathes fumes that act in a drug-like fashion and produce vision's of the target's wildest fears.

A breath weapon that covers you in magical CHOCOLATE! It only does nonlethal damage, but it makes everything try to eat you, including your horse!
Verelor

07-15-06, 09:44 AM
Magical chocolate? Uh yeah...no.

Here's a wonderful idea that has not been attempted: alkaline breath, the chemical opposite of acid. Alkaline substances in our world include chlorine, sodium, lye, and soapy materials. Since this would introduce a new energy type into your setting, you have a few options:
- Creatures that have acid resistance use half that resistance for determining resistance to alkaline damage. Acid immunity bestows alkaline resistance 25.
- Make sure spells (such as resist elements) and magic items (such as an armor of alkaline resistance) are readily available for resisting alkaline damage.

Make sure the other abilities the dragon has are not too powerful if using the second option.

Such a dragon would be likely to live very deep beneath the earth and its ultimate enemy among dragons would be no surprise: the black dragon.

1. is an orange dragon

2. is a displacer dragon

3. has yet to be named

The Design and Development article got me thinking...what about a dragon whose breath rusts metal items? Use the new, less punishing, rules for rust damage that they just came out with, and make it take the form of a cone of oxodizing gas or particles. It also damages flesh, but is less deadly than most dragon breath; its main scariness comes from the equipment ownage. Good for an Orange Dragon.

Displacer dragon should have a breath weapon that causes some kind of disturbance in reality. Maybe it teleports whoever it hits to a random place or puts them in temporal stasis for a few rounds. If your game includes Chronomancy, you have even more options.

Other random breath weapons:

Dessication (acts similar to a Horrid Wilting spell)

Brine Crystals (piercing damage and stunning from the intense pain)

Shockwave (deals sonic damage and knocks you back 1d4x10 feet)

Necrotizing Bacteria (deals little initial damage, but consumes many hit points over the next few rounds)

Arrows (shoots a hail of arrows from its mouth like that one Rakshasa dude from Hindu mythology).

Some of these suggestions are interesting, and some of them are just plain over-the-top. Someone really should try alkaline damage one of these days.

Reading that first reply, is it an alchemy dragon? That would be awesome. And a steel dragon, that would be cool too. But as for that breath weapon, how about a liquification breath weapon? Not acid or anything, but like the attack from a chaos beast melts people. Other than that, I've got nothing.
Kel

07-16-06, 01:53 AM
:dragon: The orange dragon is in Dragon Magazine's Dragon Compendium. It iis pretty cool. :dragon:

:dragon: The displacer dragon... Perhaps,as a breathe weapon, something that internally displaces internal organs slightly, dealing damage? And an ability I thiught up for a PrC, can create a dimension door under someones feet and they fall into a volcano. :dragon:

:dragon: For your other dragon, i like the alchemical dragon alot. Could have fewer spell-like-abilities, but would gain immunities to Acid and Bases(whatever the scientific term was...), fire, and maybe sonic damage(from the explosions) over time. They could also have several breath weapons, some of which they gain over time. A line of Acid/Base, a blast of flame, which explodes(some fire, some sonic, Gets blasted bag 2d10=something-based-on-age-category feet, and they take falling damage. :dragon:

i also vote for an alchemical dragon and kel has the right idea but i would go with more from its name sake. give it several breath weapons based on alchemical substances. alchemical fire, whatever is in tangle foot bags, and the like. a walking chem lab. make it neutral and very intelligent. focus his spells on transmutting substances. how about a rock to lava breath weapon.

a breath weapon that removes all the hair from a person. not as silly as it sounds both smell and balance are directly conected to hair. scent ability is right out the window :teach:

i like the displacer dragon

Here's my two cents.

1) A mucus-like breath weapon that does all, one, or a combination of the following:

A) Is sticky and has an effect like a web spell, or solidifies with similar results (no movement though).
B) Causes paralysis.
C) Causes effected characters to be slowed as per the spell.
D) Blinds creatures as per the spell.
E) Has an effect like that of the solid fog spell.
F) On a failed save, characters begin "drowning" (see drowning rules) in the mucus as it clogs airways.
G) The mucus absorbs magic (not permanently) and those covered in the mucus are effectively in an anti-magic zone (range personal) or under the effects of dispell magic. DM discretion as to how to remove the mucus (actions that must be taken-full action, 2 full actions, and how it can be removed- a gallon of water, it must be burnt away, etc.).

2) The breath weapon is actually a swarm of insects. They are part of the dragons digestive system and actually begin "digesting" they prey outside of the dragons gullet. Again, this breath weapon may have any or all of the following effects:

A) Works as the spell summon swarm (with more damage, of course) except the swarm moves with the target of a failed save. Note: Change chart for type of creature summoned, it should be small vermin (no giant praying mantis or the like).
B) On a failed save, characters begin "drowning" (see drowning rules) as the vermin swarm travel through airways to begin "digestion" from the inside (damage still applies).
C) The swarm doesn't do damage, but characters of a failed save are carried back to the dragon. Treat as telekinesis. Dinner is served!!!!!!
D) The breath weapon (swarm) first paralizes (sp?), then begins "digesting".
E) The vermin of the breath weapon emit a high pitch sound and cause deafness (and "digestion" damage) or drown out sound in an area effect like the silence spell.
As a final note, the breath weapon is actual vermin, and are treated thusly, ie. the dragon could cast giant vermin (spell).

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

How about a Desert Dragon that is made of solidafied black sand and can have large whip-like apendages come from its body made of sand. It can also turn into a pile of sand to move around and ambush prey.

It has a breath weapon that is a cone of Dehidrating Sand that, when used on a living creature, sucks all liquids out of its prey, basicaly mummifying its prey alive.

Alchemy Dragon Abilities by Age

The dragon that stands before you now has scales that slowly shift through the color spectrum, and a strange, 8 pointed star-like symbol on its forehead. It smells sharply of lye and white smoke wafts out of its nostrils.

Alchemy Dragons are a unique type of dragon, due to the fact that instead of focusing on sorcery like other dragons, they focus on alchemy. Unlike other dragons, they are dexterous enough to manipulate beakers, vials, and crucibles for alchemy. They are usually solitary creatures that will ask intruders why they are here rather than attacking on sight. Alchemy Dragons make their lairs inside of caves that are rich in mineral deposits which they use for their alchemic research. They can survive off of a diet of the mineral deposits that they live around, but the greatly prefer animals. They avoid eating humans or other intelligent creatures because they believe that to be barbaric.

Combat
Alchemy Dragons rarely fight without provocation, but when gently nudged into combat, they can be fearsome foes. They usually try to use their tanglefoot breath weapon initially to slow down its foes, then flying up to the roof of its cavern and battering them with their breath weapons and alchemic items.
Breath Weapon (Su): An alchemy dragon has three types of breath weapons, a line of alchemists fire, a cone of acid, and a blob of viscous adhesive that functions as a tanglefoot bag, except that it covers a 10ft radius up to 30ft away.
Supreme Alchemy (Su): An alchemy dragon can create alchemic items without paying for raw materials, so they often keep a few barrels of alchemists fire or acid around for throwing at their enemies in between breath weapons.
Spell-Like Abilities: 3/day – blink (old or older), 2/day – polymorph (ancient or older), 1/day (each) – transmute rock to mud, transmute mud to rock (great wyrm)
Skills: Concentration, Craft (alchemy), Diplomacy, Hide, and Move Silently are considered Class Skills for an alchemy dragon.

Sorry if the tables are nearly illegible, just copy them into a Word document and you should be able to read it.

*screams in anger that someone would defy the coolness of his version of an alchemical dragon* I think that explosions are necessary, I took a CHemistry class before summer and two kids destroyed a lot of delicate lab equippment (by playing with the pure sodium and water).Alchemy is really rather like chemistry, which would probably mean many explosions.

What about a dragon that manipulates gravity? Thier breath weapon would either make them fall towards them to get eaten, fall up and then back down after a suitable period of time, or maybe increase gravity in the area so that they take damage from thier own suddenly immense weight.

The reason i didn't put explosions is because there are no explosives (yet) in standard world of d&d that i know about. And by the way, in d&d, alchemy is like chemistry, but in real life alchemy is like a combination of chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, magic, relgion, and art. It was based mostly on the principle of adjectives, i.e. if you could extract the "liquid" property of mercury, you'd have silver. But thats basically just me showing off my knowledge of alchemy. Add explosions if you want, but I left them out for a reason.

A hemisphere of collapsing paradoxes, which inflicts large damage on the living, large ability drain on the undead, and causes living creatures to become undead, while undead creatures become the same kind of living creature they would be if they weren't undead.

A hail of several, small beams of light & force which attack a certain number of times within the area of effect.

A line of black aura, which causes damage to everything in its area of effect equal to one half the amount of damage it has already taken times 1d4.

I had another cruel idea for a breath weapon that I may use for a dragon myself if you dont use it. :evillaugh
Have you ever had a biology class? Anemia is caused by a shortage of red blood cells. Even if the breath weapon somehow made your red blood cells disappear, it would not pour out of the blood vessels.

Hmmm, I'll have to check on that, but I do beleive you are correct, I forgot and got lost in my quest to make an awesome breath weapon. What am I thinking of then, merely an extreme thinning of the blood or perhaps a widening of the pores and vessels? Any ideas on how to make this idea of making blood drain out or the victim work?

Overall the "V" agents tend to be highly persistent and thus is non-volatile. When compared with the "G" agents the "V" agents are much more lethal and persistent. In general "V" agents enter the body by skin contact or inhalation when a gas.

All I can think of is a cone of gas which, when inhaled, enters the blood stream and damages endothelial tissue. That would give you those results, although I'm not sure how fast that would work. It would also technically be a poison.

What about something causing all the vessels even the capillaries in the body to hemorrhage and I beleive the pressure from all the blood of the body being released in a split second would cause it to come through the pores like I'm envisioning.

This could a blood dragon and have claws of wounding so the slashes from the claws keep bleeding and maybe it could have some other blood spells and could spawn blood elementals from its victims blood.

This substance doesnt have to be scientific in nature to burst all the vessels, just tune the magic to affect only the vessel tissue or something along those lines.

Oh and yes you were correct about anemia, I was just thinking thin blood would mean it could come through the lining of the vessels but didnt give the idea enough thorough thought.

Avasculate spell; Libris Mortis.

Yep exactly what I need, I just got to checking the book for it. I'll just adapt that to a breath weapon and make my blood dragon and either post it here if this is still going on or post it in a new thread.

Shadow dragons have magical ability to asorb magic spells 60%.
