Desperately seeking converted critters. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm converting a old 1st ed module ("Eye of the Serpent" by Graeme Morris, TSR9125, published in 1984 in the UK adventure series if you're interested) and am trying to save myself as much work as possible by finding conversions of the monsters used. Considering this is a first level adventure, the 49 differerent monsters used makes this a rather critter-rich module (but then, weren't they all back in '84?:)).
I've found most of them but am having no luck tracking some of them down. I've got the MM, MMII, FF, and Tome of Horrors for resource, and have searched on the Creature Catalog too and I don't think I've missed any from these sources.
If you can point me in the direction of finding these, or have your own conversions I'd be much appreciative of any help (meant to be playing this tomorrow night!).
I'm sure some of these should be easy to find but my brain seems to be shutting down...

Cheers,

Evan.

Musk Oxen use Bison stats (3.5 MM page 269-270, the bison description notes that the stats can be used for any large herd animal)

Lacedon is an aquatic ghoul, stats can be found on page 119 of the 3.5 monster manual, lacedons are mentioned directly at the top of the page.

Koalinth is an aquatic hobgoblin (or at least was in previous editions) use the hobgoblin stats from the MM and apply a swim speed, or else use locathah stats would be myn suggestion.

Splanxty never heard of it.

Scum Creeper sounds familiar, but can't quite place it...

Bullywug bullywugs were converted (albeit poorly) in Monsters of Faerun.

Mist Mephit were dropped between editions... I would simply use air or steam mephits instead.

hope that helps some :)

Doh!

I knew that the lacedon and koalinth sounded very familiar. Serves me right for assuming the index in the MM would have sub-species listed...

I'll use the bison stats for the musk oxen as suggested.

I'm not surprised you've not heard of the Splanxty, it's the "new monster" in the back of the module and I doubt it's made another appearance since. It's basically a water dwelling fey that is "said to be related to both nixies and leprechauns." I'll probably just use nixie stats if I can't find it elsewhere.

I don't have access to MoF and am unfamiliar with the bullywug - any suggestions on another creature I could use instead? The stats in the module make me think they're some sort of half frog/half man creature?

I think I'll have to convert the mist mephit as the encounter is specifically tied to its fog cloud ability.

Thanks for your help :)

yeah, bullywugs are frog-people.... Thier stats are very similar to a hobgoblins, even if thier apearence is not (although thier favored class is barbarian, and thier alignment is often chaotic evil)... I would just use hobgoblin stats with a chaotic alignment and describe them as 5 and a half foot tall frog people.

And the special attack "hop" I have listed here? I'm just guessing they have a high racial jump mod in 3e yes?

Also, looking at the limited details in the module for the scum creepers, I would say they're aberations of some sort that coat their victims in a rocky shell - does that help jog your memory? They were originally in the 1st ed MMII.

thier hop special ability was actually removed between the editions (one of the things that makes me say the conversion was a poor one)... although yes they do have a racial modifier to jump checks though (+4 I think)... and for the hop ability I would allow them to use a charge action coupled with a jump check to charge a foe even if there is difficult terrain (bushes, rubble, pools etc.) in the way.

They were originally in the 1st ed MMII. that would be where I saw it then, I was digging around in my 1e MM2 last week while working on a project.... sorry I would not know where to find a conversion.
