Hiya All :)

My group is just starting to find some tough/name type devils/demons and we were wondering what happens when they are killed these days ?

A few players that have been around for a while say that it used to depend on what plane they were killed on and sometimes they were banished for 100 years or had to start their lives again as a low level type and build up again.

Do they just die now ? Or is there something else that happens...

An outsider who is summoned is merely send back to his homeplane.

An outisder who is called or came on his own through planeshift, a gate, or something similar is dead.

Basically, if they are really there then they are really killed. Only if they are summoned or astraly projected are they not really there. All else is up for grabs.

There's always been a question regarding what exactly happens, and that novels and stories tend to elaborate on it doesn't help things either. 3e hasn't much even touched on the subject, but what Mirtek says can largely be implied as correct.

2e Planescape had some (at times conflicting) information that conflicted with this however, and while 3e hasn't revisted such things I simply see it as flavor for a DM to play around with as they see fit. For instance Arcanaloths could only be permenantly killed in Gehenna, Dhergoloths could only be killed outside of the 3 lower planes of conflict (gehenna, the waste, carceri), etc. If killed on any other plane their essence would slowly seep back to their native plane and gradually reform. As it stood then and now in 3e when a fiend is permenantly killed their essence returns to and fuses with their home plane with little chance of them returning barring the intervention of someone with enough power and inclination to reform them (ie a wish, miracle, or a specialized revive outsider spell, etc).

And this is an understatement. Xanxost sums it up nicely when he says: "It all depends on where it dies, what kind of tanar'ri it is, and how many claws it has on its left foot. Actually it does not matter at all about the foot." Of course, Faces of Evil is a fine source of information, but oho! Xanxost is a blue slaad, so bow wow puce vomit wombat, yes?

Anyway, the issue is rather academic in most games, since the reformation process is usually quite long even by the standards of immortal beings, let alone the standards of extremely mortal PCs that make the mistake of killing a fiend above lemure/dretch status.

IMC, of course.
