Difference between demons and devils? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-15-06, 08:00 PM I looked for it, but I just don't see it. Is it just the slight differences of language and special abilities to the entire type. Obviously there are different varieties, but is there a difference beyond that?

10-15-06, 08:03 PM Demons are chaotic, devils are lawful. Also, demons can't be Baatezu and devils can't be Tanar'ri. Those two subtypes have slightly different abilities.

10-15-06, 10:52 PM The fiend types differ in their origins, what plane (or planes) they're native to, and what specific aspect of Evil they exist as a physical manifestion of.

Tanar'ri and other demons want a universe of utter freedom in which to endulge themselves in bloody savagery and every aspect of their malign whimsy for eternity unconstrained by outside law.

Baatezu and other devils want a universe of perfect order and rigid structure in which the strong rule the weak by any means necessary.

Yugoloths desire a "universe of perfection, devoid of mercy".

10-16-06, 06:19 PM Mmmmhmmm... pretty much what Shemeska said. Theoretically you could create a creature as a devil and then change it to be a demon with little actual mechanical diffrences (other then alignment and sub-type). It's mainly the concept that's driving the seperation.
