| Silver Dragon12-11-04, 04:38 PM | hi, How come there is a difference between the adjustment in EL en level adjustment of templates? like a vampire is EL+2 and LA +8, thus an 10lvl human thief played by the DM counts as level 12, while played by a Player as lvl 18. I can't see the use of it. thx in advance Ascendaril |
| Morwen12-11-04, 04:48 PM | The main reason is that a PC character will be able to use his special abilities throughout the entire campaign, rather than for 3-4 rounds of one encounter. Also, the CR assumes the creature faces 4 PCs of appropriate level, so you can't compare CR directly to ECL (which provides the level you use when comparing such a character to a regular PC). |
| Morwen12-11-04, 10:29 PM | Having looked a bit closer at it, I think the +8 might be supposed to be +5, for a couple of reasons: -all other CR +2 templates have LA +5 or less. -the Vampiric Dragon template from the Draconomicon has LA +5 (and CR +2) as well. -the sample Vampire is listed as having LA +5. On the other hand, the sample Elite Vampire is listed as having LA +8, and there is no change mentioned in the errata for the MM. |
| Minister_for_Moral_Truth12-12-04, 07:23 AM | Another significant point is that a PC gets equipment from his/her character levels, monster hit dice and LA combines, whereas an NPC only gets based on character levels. You can't tell me that a Lvl 1 Troll fighter with greatsword and studded leather is of the same calibre as the same troll in +2 full plate of acid and fire resistance with a +2 frost greatsword, can you? |
