Dinosaur questions [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-23-04, 09:41 PM I just picked up the eberron campaign setting and found velociraptor, pteranodon, and a little australian dinosaur which pleased me. There was also a chart listing all core rules product dinosaurs. Here are my two questions:

1. Monster Manual 3 dinosaurs didn't have real names.

Does this mean they'll be fictional or that the publishers are keeping the new dinosaurs' identities as a surprise?

2. What about serpent kingdoms?

My supplier hasn't gotten it in quite yet, so I haven't seen it. Ebberron's dinosaur list didn't mention it, but the previews mentioned it contained some terrible lizards. Which ones were they?

I know i've posted this before, but when do we get Stegosaurus and Brontosaurus(Apatosaurus)? I have an old Dungeon Master's guide from 1980 and it lists about 30 prehistoric monsters being in the first edition.

I dont know about Serpent Kingdoms, but there are some dinosaurs (including the stegosaurus) in Dragon 118.

Meaning... I'll guess that they are modern dinosaurs descended from the dinosaurs that we're familiar with. So while there's something familiar with them, they're also a bit different.

The Serpent Kingdoms Web Enhancement mentions in detail four subraces of saurials, which are humanoid ("reptilian") descendants of dinosaurs. Except for the tail, they strongly remind me of the hypothetical dinosaur envisioned by real-world paleontologist Dale Russell of Canada's Royal Tyrrell (hope I got the spelling right) Museum in Toronto. He created these dinosaurs assuming that they didn't get extinct; they were upright bipeds with human-level intelligence.

I doubt the thing has damage reduction, so the 3.0 entry and the 3.5 entry should be virtually identical.

It probably wont make a lot of difference, but didnt dinosaurs have the Beast type in 3.0? There will be a few differences with statistics if they did, since they are animals now. It wont make them unusable though.

07-28-04, 12:41 AM wait, is it Dragon 118 or 318? It makes a difference on backtracking. Also, anyone feel like listing the dinosaurs' names so I can tell if it's worth hunting for?

07-28-04, 01:48 AM I'm 110% certain it's Dragon 318. Two reasons, 1) I'm looking right at it ;), and 2) 118 would've been an issue released in the 80s ;).

Compsognathus
Dimetrodon
Diplodocus
Giganotosaurus
Helicoprion
Liopleurodon
Pachycephalosaurus
Parasaurolophus
Pteranodon
Rhamphorhynchus
Stegosaurus

Of course...some of them aren't dinosaurs, but they're cool enough prehistoric critters that I decided to include them in the article anyway.

Serpent Kingdoms has stats for the Ceratosaurus, Pteranodon, and Stegosaurus (the last two have different stats than the Dragon versions).

07-28-04, 04:33 PM Some of the dinos show up on wandering monster tables for the Isle of Dread in Dungeon #114, but alas, we didn't have room to reprint any stat blocks or anything fancy like that.
