As you turn around to examine the cause of the noise, your eyes meet those of a savage beast with ivory claws and a long snout. It stares you down with cruel white eyes and then lashes its tongue at you like a whip. Dire anteaters are gigantic relatives of the giant anteater and tamandua. Like their smaller cousins, they have sharp claws used for burrowing into termite nests and long tongues for lapping up their prey. Unlike their relatives, dire anteaters have small teeth and will sometimes supplement their diet with small animals and carrion. On average, dire anteaters weigh roughly 700 pounds and grow to a length of about 12 feet long. Combat: Dire anteaters usually prey on vermin, but have been known to prey on other small creatures as well. When encountered with a creature smaller than itself, the dire anteater seizes its prey with its tongue and carries it off. If the victim happens to escape from the dire anteater's adhesive tongue, the animal grapples its fleeing foe, pins it down, and rips at it with its claws until it stops moving. Constrict (Ex): If a dire anteater grabs a foe with its tongue, it can constrict for 1d4+3 points of damage. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, the dire anteater must hit an opponent of small size or smaller with its tongue attack. Rend (Ex): A dire anteater that hits with both claw attacks latches onto the opponent's body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an additional 2d6+12 points of damage. |

Instead, their huge size gives them ravenous appetites, so they kill creatures with their claws, carry them off with their toungues, and bury them in ant hills. Basically, they farm ants. This would also give them the capacity to have some treasure, if the PCs are willing to dig though ant-infested ground. |
