| thalog08-06-07, 01:32 PM | is their a standard (official) way of converting one of the standard animals in the monster manual to a dire version of itself or a lycanthrope template im trying to finish a small off shot adventure in my campaign were the players are sent to the four corners of the world to collect 4 items and one is an artic senario and just to lighten the mood cause the quest is very difficult i wanted the local eskimo's to be were-penguins and have dire penguins as guard animals i know it sounds silly but any help would be great thanks in advance |
| Breetai08-06-07, 01:46 PM | Actually the Lycanthrope is a template that can be added to either Humaniod or Giant. So making it dire would be custom. *EDIT* Essentially you'd be making a new critter a "Dire Lycanthrope" |
| zook1shoe66608-06-07, 03:17 PM | a werewolf is a humanoid with lycanthropy from a wolf, a werewolf lord is a humanoid with lycanthropy from a dire wolf, therefore most of the dire animal forms caoul be were-"animal" lords. |
| snakeman83008-06-07, 03:23 PM | There is no template for turning a normal animal into a Dire version. Unfortunate, but true. As for turning any animal into a lycanthrope type, then yes, there is. It is called the lycanthrope template. |
| DebiHuman08-06-07, 04:59 PM | Tome of Horrors from Necromancer Games has a free template for making Dire Animals but that's the only one I know of. You can find it here: http://www.necromancergames.com/pdf/ToHDire.pdf Debby |
| Draginja08-07-07, 01:14 AM | I believe the questions are 1) Is there a "Dire" template? ans 2) Is there a "Lycanthrope" template. The answer to both is yes. |
| snakeman83008-08-07, 12:41 PM | Just looked at the "Dire" template, and I'll tell you right now that it doesn't work out. Let's give a few examples of dire creatures that this doesn't work for: 1. Dire Bat(MM). Most obvious reason: size increase from dimminuative to large (instead of dimminuative to small) 2. Dire Wolf (MM). Most obvious reason: No speed increase. 3. Dire Tiger(MM). Most obvious reason: No size increase, too large Natural Armor increase, no speed increase 4. Dire barracudda (Stromwrack). Most obvious reason: Too high of a speed increase (60 to 80 feet), too large Natural Armor increase 5. Dire Eel (Stromwrack). Most obvious reason: No speed increase, too small of a natural armor increse. 6. Dire Polar Bear (Frostburn). Most obvious reason: No speed increase. This template is okay, but I wouldn't use it. Ever. You get much better results by just winging it. |
