I don't know if anyone has ever created a Dire Animal template before, but here is my version. It was kinda trick sense the dire animals all have unique stats.

This is a template designed to create a generic dire animal.

Please P.E.A.C.H., if you have any comments, ideas, or suggestions please feel free to post them.

TEMPLATE: DIRE ANIMAL
Dire animal is a template that can be added to any animal.

Size and Type: The base creature’s size increases by 1 or more steps, for example if the base creature is tiny it increases to small. The animal’s type is unchanged.

Speed: The base creature’s speed increases based on it’s new size.

Hit Dice: Quadruple the base creature HD for each size increase, for example if the base creature is tiny and has 1/4D8, and it increases to medium it increases twice, to 1d8 at small and 4d8 at medium.

Armor Class: The dire animal’s natural armor bonus increases by 4 for each size increase, a dire animal’s new size also effects its AC.

Attack: Same as base animal.

Full Attack: Same as base animal.

Damage: The damage from a dire animal’s natural attacks increases based on it’s new size.

Special Attack: Same as base animal.

Special Qualities: Same as base animal.

Abilities: Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +0, Wis +0, Cha +0, per size increase. Note: This area is open to change, if the base animal is more reliant Dexterity then Strength, increase Dexterity by +4 instead of Strength.

Skills: 2+ Int modifier per HD. Adjust Hide Modifier according to new size.

Feats: A dire animal gains a feat for every 3 HD.

CR: +2 per size increase.

Alignment: Always Neutral.

There was a Dire Animal Template that was created by Necromancer games and you can find it here: http://www.necromancergames.com/pdf/ToHDire.pdf

This has actually been done a great many times before; the fact of the matter is that because a dire animal represents a larger ancestor/relative of a modern animal, there is no way to create a model (i.e. a template) for how to extract that extinct creature from a modern creature it is related to that will work across the board - in part because of the difference in how closely related the modern animal is to its precursor.

Probably the closest you could come would be to generate a series of Dire templates, which could be applied depending upon the creature's role: hunter, scavenger, raptor, grazer, herd animal, etc.
