We've received the first batch of Dire Animals in MMI, the second in MMII, the Dire Rhinoceros in FF (don't know why), the Dire Eagle in RoS, the (converted) Dire Hawk in RoW, the Dire Polar Bear in Frostburn and The Dire Jackal, Puma, Tortoise and Vulture in Sandstorm. The last books contain other animals but are more prehistoric than dire if you ask me, such as the Saber-Toothed Tiger.

What else do you want to see in the upcoming books ? There's no doubt that the upcoming Races books, like Races of Eberron, and the upcoming Lands books, like Maelstrom, will have a batch.

A Dire Fox or a Dire "Tasmanian Devil" (Tasmania doesn't exist in Greyhawk, Faerun or Eberron), without the spinning frenzy, of course, would be nice.

Dire SKUNK. Not exactly armed with a breath weapon, but I'm sure it will be just as feared as a dragon in the right circumstances.

Other critters might be Hamsters ( Being stuffed in cheek pouches would probably be more humiliating than damaging. :D ) or a rabbit. Turn the tables on predators for once. ^_^

The original Dire Animal was Canis Diris, the Dire Wolf. So, technically, all dire animals are prehistoric.

Yes I'm aware that they are fictional creations.

Real dire wolves were only about 10% larger than modern wolves, though. Nowhere near horse-sized.

That'd be awesome. An invasion of Trogs riding Dire Skunks came to a city and commoners would drop like flies. :plotting: :evillaugh

Or Gnomes mounted on Dire Hamsters. Now that'd be scary. :twitch: :twitch:

PS: Do they even have stats for a regular Skunk?

The Dire Rhino was placed in FF because the FF, MM2 and MM3 are where they put not only original monsters but also MM rejects. I'm guessing in afew years they could actually make a book of Dire and regular animals.

I'm probably going to get shot for this, but...

Dire Dinosaurs.

Seriously, regardless of how you feel about dinos in core D&D, there is something a little cool about the image of a dire tyranosaurus rex being used as a living siege engine. Or a pack of dire deinonychi shredding up a group of PCs.

Just a thought.

What are Cavvies??

Cavies are rodents that vaguely resemble a cross between rabbits and rats. IIRC, they are native to South America.

Oddly enough, just last week our DM had us go into a swamp to find what we thought was a white dragon that had been terrorizing the local populous. It turned out to be a dire crane :twitch:

You can imagine our surprise when the paper crane hand puppet rose menacingly up over the top of the DM screen.

It was actually pretty cool. It also swallowed the halfling. :(

We cut him out after the battle. He was fine. :)

Though he may have some new emotional problems :mymy:
