Is there something missing in the combat entry for the Dire Bear?

Are they supposed to be able to do something when they have an opponent grappled? Most of the creatures that have improved grab can do some sort of auto damage when they grapple. It almost looks like they didnt finish this section for the dire bear. It can do much more damage by clawing. Why would it want to grapple if it cant do anything while grappling?

The page in reference is pg# 63.

Thx

Maybe it should have rend like the dire ape. I dunno. You could always remake it, I guess.

Actually, no, nothing is missing. Look at the Owl Bear. It has improved grab, but no other abilities. You must remember that a creature with natural attacks does automatic claw damage during a grapple.

In real life, bears try to pin their prey to the ground. Bears have the improved grab to simulate this. It's just a normal grapple (but started as a free action due to the improved grab).

If the bear wins, the opponent is pinned beneath its claws, taking claw damage every turn...

Same with the owl bear. In previous editions, it had a bear hug ability, where if it hit with both claws, it did extra crushing damage (kinda like rend, but not). It has no such ability now because of the way grapple works. With improved grab, it has the same effect as in prior editions.

Read up on grappling in the PHB, and improved grab in the MM.
