Dire boar and grappling [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-30-05, 01:31 AM Greets, in my last session we had an argument about whether or not a dire boar should deal damage automatically once it has succesfully grappled an opponent.

Some believed that it should roll an attack as normal, some others believed that, since it used its teeth to grapple, it should deal damage without rolling for an attack because the enemy was already inside the boar's mouth.

Which of the two is it?

03-30-05, 10:52 AM I'd say the damage would be dealt every time the opponent failed to escape the grapple; that seems to be how it works with crocodiles, purple worms, and tyrannosauri, anyway.

03-30-05, 12:13 PM A boar that starts a grapple can deal it's unarmed damage after it has succesfully started a grapple (1d4+Str)on the round it starts the grapple. During the grapple it can make an attack roll at -4 to hit with it's gore, or make a grapple check to deal normal unarmed damage (1d4+Str) (picture this as the boar grinding you into the ground with its weight).

The boar most likely grapples you by grabbing ahold of you and stepping or laying on top of you. It does not actually gore you the round it starts a grapple.
If it wants to gore you it must use the 'Attack your opponent' action to deal gore damage.
