Dire Raven? [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-14-07, 07:14 PM I have a raven themed bard with a raven familiar and everything on him is themed after the bird (except that he hasn't PrCed into knight of the raven) and he's looking to get a giant raven cohort to ride. Could anyone stat one of these out for a 6th level character?

It'd be the same as a normal familiar I'd expect (though would require the Improved Familiar feat I'd say).

Take a look at the Giant Owls and Hawks in the Monster Manual for exact rules, as those, as well as the price, is the same for the giant raven. Its not the same stat-wise however.

I made a Dire Raven a little while back, though, if anyone's interested (basically I took the Dire Bat and adjusted him a wee bit).

These large carrion feeding birds are related to common ravens and crows. If threatened, they will defend themselves but usually avoid combat. They can often be seen picking over corpses left on battlefields.

Combat
Dire Ravens typically swoop down on foes from above to strike thier prey. Often, if facing small or smaller creatures, they'll simply grapple with one and fly away.

Skills: Dire Ravens have a +4 racial bonus on Spot and Listen checks.

Training a Dire Raven

Dire Raven's can be trained to be ariel mounts. Training a dire raven requires six weeks of work and a DC 20 Handle Animal check. Riding a dire raven requires an exotic saddle. A dire raven can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check. A combat mount trained Dire Raven knows the tricks: attack, come, defend, down, guard, and heel.

Dire raven eggs are worth 2,000 gp apiece on the open market, while hatchlings are worth 3,000 gp each. Professional trainers charge 1,000 gp to rear or train a dire raven.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a dire raven is up to 152 pounds; a medium load, 153–306 pounds; and a heavy load, 307–460 pounds. A dire raven cannot fly with a heavy load.
