Is there such a thing as a dire template? Or even pattern to how they arrive at a dire creature?

Nobody seems to see it, no matter how often I post it here, but there's one.

A dire animal is just the normal animal with more extra HD than normally allowed. Then they look at the CR and do a ballpark check to make sure that nothing silly is happening.

But basically it is an animal with extra HD.

No. It's an animal with more HD, usually better armor, higher STR/CON/etc. It is not just an advanced animal. =P

I took a quick peak at the Dire template, and it may work for some but I think it's nonsense.
Take a look at the Brown Bear (6HD) / Dire Bear (12HD): an upgrade of +6HD.
Then check the Tiger (6HD) / Dire Tiger (16HD): an upgrade of +10HD.

Now you want me to use a Dire template with the first line reading "Hit Dice increase by +2HD"?

There is no template for Dire animals, there isn't even a rule of thumb to create one. Although the basic mechanics of an animal and its Dire equivalent are similar, the stats have no relation. Make something nice up.

sort of ... the Tome of Horror's version attempts to make a template where one did not previously exist. You do have a good point, officially there isn't one ... go 3rd party (I prefer the ToH's template) or make up your own.
