The Monster Manual and SRD list a Dire weasel's Will Save as +4. Why?

Dire weasels, like all Animals, appear to have strong Fortitude and Reflex saves, and they have a Wisdom score of 12. It seems that the dire weasel's Will save should be the weak Will save for a 3rd level/3 hit-die creature, or +1, plus the Wisdom modifier (+1) for a total of +2. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

You're probably missing the part of the Animal type description that says "some animals have different Good saves". It would appear that the Dire Weasel has Good Ref and Will, while it has Poor Fort (otherwise it would have Fort +5 rather than +3).

Dire weasels have a Constitution of 10, for an ability modifier of +0. If they have a strong Fort save like most Animals, and 3 HD, then isn't a Fort save of +3 what's expected? Where are you getting the +5 from? Thanks!

Maybe it has all good saves, because Dire Weasels are just that darn awesome?

Heh, sorry. For some reason got the idea that Fort was STR. Anyway, the rest of my post still applies (unless WotC made a mistake with its Will save, which is also possible) :)

Morwen and StruckingFuggle are correct. All three of a dire weasel's saves are good. This is perfectly legal, per the description of the animal type:

Good Fortitude and Reflex saves (certain animals have different good saves).
The dire weasel has 3 HD, which means a +3 base save bonus for good saves. Its saves are:

Fort +3 (+3 base, +0 Con)

Ref +7 (+3 base, +4 Dex)

Will +4 (+3 base, +1 Wis)

I guess Dire Weasels are like the Monk of the animal kingdom.

I must thank you, and my players will hate you, when they meet the Awakened Dire Weasel Monking Mauler...

... ... thank you for the idea. :)

Excellent. I shall draw up a were-weasal monk character and toss it into an adventure as a secondary attacker immedietly (lyncans already are pretty cool for monk characters, with the natural armor bonus and the bump to Wisdom and Physical stats).

Edit: I just looked, and ALL the dire animals in the SRD have all good saves.

A were-dire-weasel would be a meeeaaan character. Love that con drain.
