In 3rd edition these monsters were trouncing the competition, many monsters that were highe level. With the trip attack nothing but tumblers could get away. Now that 3.5 has put in attacks of opportunity for getting up from prone the dire wolves are unstoppable.

Has anyone found this? Are there any decent tactics to use against dire wolves?

Kill them? Perhaps this should go in WaPtd? I'll give my 2cp before it's moved.

You can't trip against getting up because, the AoO happens before the provoking action happens, meaning they are still prone (Or as good as prone) Ranged attacks would be good, and dwarves and creatures with high(er) strength would be too.

Has anyone found this? Are there any decent tactics to use against dire wolves? shoot them down with arrows and ranged spells.

also since they don't have combat reflexes they only get 1 AoO a round, so have a different character provoke one, then the prone character can stand up with out drawing one.

Personally, I miss the 2e Dire wolves.

They were only 4HD, and could only do 2-8 damage. Rather than, you know, 25 Strength, etc...

Grapple them, be a dwarf, fight from prone, use variant tumble rules for a kick-up, use spells

IMO they're overpowered. I've used these against players and ... umm... no, they're too strong for their CR, unless there are convenient trees to climb :D

Too many hp, too much damage, too good an attack bonus (I can't believe I'm saying that) ... I didn't even use the Trip attacks because I wanted my players to have a chance.
