| AAOMasta03-16-05, 10:10 PM | In my campaign Ii need to create some sort of four legged beast of medium size that has the ability to spread a disease to many people. The campaign has alot to do with undead so I was thinking of mixing traits from the Tyrantfog zombie from the Monsters of Faerun. This is the first time I've really had to flesh out my own monster, since the books have always suited me. Does anyone have any advice or ideas? All input is much appreciated. |

If you haven't done your own monster before, I recommend that you find the closest thing to what you want, then alter it by adding the necessary parts. If you can decide on the sort of CR you want beforehand, ti'll help you to pick out which parts you'll use. Exploding when destroyed is a good way to spread disease (and it's digusting for whoever killed it). |

| krichaiushii03-17-05, 07:52 PM | Mummified dogs? That could be an interesting disease. Play up rabies, but instead of it being spread through a bite, it can be spread through other means. And as the infected creature is dying, it has a drive to attack as many creatures as possible, virtually guaranteeing the spread of the disease. |
| Titan W03-17-05, 08:12 PM | Another interesting Idea is somethign like the Chaos Beast, as you sucumb to an infected creature's attacks you becoem more infected yourself, untill you are as hoplessly infected as the original, for a more "Black Death Plague" type dissease, go with the classic, rats and insects... they spread nasty disseases, and are in the DnD world already, just stick about 30 disseased rats in a town that has some biting insects, and the whole town will be sick in a few days... |
| NyMpHoMaNiAc_FaNtAsIA03-17-05, 08:19 PM | You could always take the classic path and have some werewolves, wererats or any of its variants ravaging and terrorizing your town at night, as those who are bitten suffer the same fate. I not sure lychantropy is considered a disease but is has that flavor to it. |
| Charles the druid03-17-05, 08:30 PM | carrier template Hit dice: increase by 1 size up to d12 Armor class: carriers gain a +2 armor bonus Attacks: carriers gain a slam attack that deals damge based on sized(same as zombie's) Undead: carriers have the undead subtype and undead qualities Unholy toughness: a carrier adds its charisma modifier to its hit dice instead of its constitution modifier Curropted flesh: Whenever an unarmed attack is made against the carrier or a living creature is hit by its slam attack that creature musk make a dc 15 fortitude save or take 1d4 temprorary constitution. Plague arura: all creatures within 30 feet of a carrier must make a fortitude save DC 20 or become inffected with a horrible illness. The creature takes 2d6 permenant constituion damge and dies in 4 days. The sickness is highly contagious and all living creatures within 5 feet of the infected one must make a dc 18 fortitude save or catch the illness themselves. The only way to remove the illness is the use of a heal, limited wish, wish, or miracle spell :evillaugh |
| AAOMasta03-17-05, 09:14 PM | Sweet, thanks guys. Yea im thinking ill just model some sort of beast much like how the mummy works, except it kills people. I was also considering making this disease like lycanthropy too, like they'd turn undead and back again and never know what happened. |
| Vatras03-18-05, 05:25 AM | If its not a combat monster, use the common rat. It can get anywhere, spread like wildfire and known to carry dreadful diseases which often dont kill the rats themselves. |
| The Morninglord03-18-05, 11:20 AM | If you want a disease to spread fast, you could possibly make a new feat: Contagous disease (based on the contagous paralysis feat from Libris Mortis) and give it to the mummified creature. That way the disease will spread not only from the creature itself, but from any infected creature as well. I've thought about such a feat myself. |

That way the disease will spread not only from the creature itself, but from any infected creature as well. I've thought about such a feat myself. It's a bit of a waste, since the D&D diseases are pretty much all contagious. The only limit is the method of transmission (ingested, inhaled, injury, contact). If you want a disease that spreads easily, you just make it a contact disease, and if you want to go one step further, you could surround the creature with a cloud of disease (emanating in a specified radius) that infects creatures. For the best effect, such a cloud would use an inhaled or contact disease. |
