But I've noticed a disturbing trend as of late - in the PC games and in a lot of the manuals and such, they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Are displacer beasts becoming extinct? Does anyone use them anymore? What was really a wake up call for me was talking to this kid (he's 12) who plays D&D on a regular basis, and he didn't even know what a displacer beast was! Is it just me, or does it seem that the more original monsters (like displacer beasts) are being replaced by "monsters" like giant ticks and toads? (I'm playing Temple of Elemental Evil" and the most original monster I've come across are a few dire rats). Since when are ticks and toads (although gigantic) the primary monesters of D&D? Or am I just playing the wrong games? Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but I'd really like to know where the more original monsters are! I want my displacer beasts dang it! |
| Spike_Fightwicky04-24-06, 08:18 AM | I love displacer beasts. Problem is, my players don't :D It's always a memorable encounter when I use a displacer beast. In fact, when I felt the players needed a good challenge (they were level 11), I advanced 2 Displacer Beasts to CR 7 (6 extra hit dice plus huge size) and gave them the Legendary Monster (MM II) template. They were the legendary guardians of an ancient giant's temple. The PCs couldn't beat them and fled. Overall, I find it hard to use the old iconic monsters, because my player's aren't really tactically sound, and I usually end up with a TPK. |

Find out what kind of game your PCs like, and work with that. Please note that I do not subscribe to Dragon or Dungeon, and cannot speak for any adventures found therein. |
