Displacer's beast cr??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-23-07, 01:06 AM According to the MM, a displacer beast (6HD) is cr4, but a displacer pack lord advanced to 18 HD is a whooping 12.

Why the huge discrepancy? 12 extra magical beast HD should just increase its cr by 4, add 1 more for a size bump from large to huge, and you should have a final cr of just 9.

Is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance for your answers.:)

Good question. It does seem like it should be at 9.

03-23-07, 02:49 AM Seeing as your CR breakdown appears to be correct at first glance, and there doesn't appear to be any errata for it, I would assume it was an ad-hoc modifier added on because the pack lord proved much more powerful than a CR 9 creature. I haven't checked it's strength against any other creatures, though, so I'm not sure.

Remember the CR increasing guidelines are just that, guidelines, and if a creature created by advancing Hit Dice is more powerful than it's CR would otherwise show, then the correct course of action is to increase the CR to match up with the monster's power level.
