| Starman IX04-07-06, 07:09 PM | So, someone gets lucky and the vampire lord fails his save. Does the BBEG go up in smoke, never ever to return? |
| ^Graff_EpsilonIX04-07-06, 07:16 PM | Well he's a vampire, what do you think is going to happen when he dies. If his coffin and suchlike is destoryed, I guess you have a problem. Or you could make him a lich as well or something. |
| Starman IX04-07-06, 07:33 PM | Disruption does not leave a body behind. I'm not talking about gaseous form. I mean poof, no more. Not even a chance of the cool little reanimation the vampire lord does. Also, the last time I checked, disruption works on liches too. |
| Terraneaux04-07-06, 10:51 PM | However, liches can come back once they are destroyed. Vampires cannot; they are just very difficult to destroy. And for the record unless you houserule it you can't be both a lich and a vampire. |
| Carpe Diem04-08-06, 10:25 PM | I assume by Vampire Lord, you mean this: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20021018a And I have the same question actually. Not only for disruption though, does disintegrate utterly annihilate the vampire as well without a chance to change into gaseous form? I wonder this because it says in the vampire description: Fast Healing: ...If reduced to 0 hit points in combat, it automatically assumes gaseous form and attempts to escape. Then in the description of disintegrate: ...Any creature reduced to 0 or fewer hit points by this spell is utterly disintegrated, leaving behind only a fine trace of dust. It mentions in Libris Mortis that disintegrate is particularly effective against undead because their Fortitude saves are so low and disintegrate affects objects. The description of spell seems to allude that the vampire is vanquished. A vampire lord is even more complex, but it looks to me that the vampire lord still needs remains in order to come back and disintegrate would take him straight out. If for whatever reason that won't work, what is a permanent solution? The only one I could think of is to visit Pelor and ask for a quick favour. An help on this topic? |
| obrysii04-08-06, 10:52 PM | I would argue that at least Disinigrate will not destroy a Vampire Lord. Look at how difficult it is to destroy one, and even then it's not sure-fire. It'll take it a long time, but it'll return from the "fine ash" that Disinigrate reduces it to. |
| Carpe Diem04-08-06, 11:06 PM | Alright, so a normal Vampire could succumb to disruption/disintegration, but a Vampire Lord would somehow stave off this effect because it has arbitrary regenerative powers. But any NPC could go to a Vampire Lord's final resting place, find the ashes and separate them from the holy water, cast unhallow and WHAMMO! Deja vu. What would be a permanent solution for a Vampire Lord? Throw his ashes in the mouth of a dead god on the astral plane? Disolve his remains in a pool of acid on Smargard, 74th layer of the Abyss? Expose it to the light of the Illuminated Heaven, 7th layer of Celestia (assuming you survive)? Or could you do something like take his remains to Pelor who could say, "You're dead - for real." The only other option is hunting down every coffin he's ever used and that's not even infallible. He could have used nondetection so you couldn't scry it out or what have you. It seems like there is no guaranteed method to me and disruption/disintegration is as sound an option as any. |

If you don't have one on hand, have the cleric use a miracle spell/scroll to ask his/her deity to destroy all the vampire lord's coffins, cast a fire protection spell on the holy water container, drop it in a volcano on an obscure layer of the Abyss, and consecrate the volcano. It's not foolproof, but it's pretty darn close. |

The reason I'm so inquisitive is because I see fighting one in the near future so I want to be foolproof in my utter annihilation of this beast. Now, let's add to the ego pad... Whoa speeble! That Sphere of Annihilation idea is ultimate! |
| Starman IX04-09-06, 05:18 PM | Also, vorpal weapons make the vampire lord headless without a drop of HP loss. |
