Hi there,

First a quick introduction as this is my first post here, I'm a DM for 11 years now, various RPG's, and since the release of 3rd Ed., DnD as well.
I'm playing a somewhat low magic Forgotten Realms Campaign (yeah, those exist!)

Onto the matter at hand: The group I play with is now 9th level, approaching 10th in 1 or 2 game sessions. Among them is a Cleric of Tempus. He chose to become a Dracolyte.

Now the problem I'm left with is that of the wyrmling he is entrusted with. First of, the cleric is Chaotic Neutral. He pointed out that to become a Dracolyte, there is no rule that says he has to pick a Draconic Deity, so his alignment won't change that way. I have no issue with that, but have a little trouble picking the right wyrmling for him.

When I look over the dragons, I can't help but notice the extreme difference in power. Story-wise, a blue, gold or mercury wyrmling would fit best, as those are the only kinds of dragons they ever had even remote contact with. However, a mercury dragon wyrmling is very very VERY weak. The blue one is quite ok, but an evil dragon... hmmm. And gold is tough, dangerous, a very good breath weapon and of course alternate form.

I've toyed with the thought of advancing a mercury wyrmling, it seems closest to the clerics alignment. Or taking a "very young" one.. any opinions? experiences?

And, it says the wyrmling cannot age or gain experience... can it advance by HD?

Chaotic Neutral? I'd think a Gem Dragon would be a viable option.. and there are 2 versions easily available: MM@, and they were statted in the psi-book Web Enhancement.

Indeed, any of the chaotic gem dragons would be perfectly appropriate. As a cleric of Tempus, I could also see a Bronze wyrm working, given their interest in warfare.

Topaz dragon. Hopefully for him though there aren't any bronze dragon encounters (not necessarily combat), as topaz and bronze dragons generally attack each other on sight.

Fang Dragon. Chaotic and very aggressive.

I don't understand how the Dracolyte works if you aren't worshipping a Draconic Diety. Even if mechanically you don't have to, how does it make sense?

But to be a little more constructive, I agree that one of the Gem dragons would make a lot of sense,

I would suggest a copper or a brass Dragon because they are one step off from the players alingment and they do state that the foster dragon should match the dracolyte's. Since he does not gain the Foster dragon untill he reaches 5th level. So this can give you plenty of time to get your party to meet a gem dragon or one of the good aligned chaotic dragons. As to the point on not following the draconic dieties I would reread the opening paragraph because it so heavily states the fact of there devotion to the draconic dieties that for him to not worship them is really not a dracolyte. I would suggest he get ready to devote himself now to a draconic diety if he wants to take this prestige class anything less should really not be excepted.

Hmm...

Well if you wanted to exactly match the deity's alignment, the dracolyte should go with Aasterinian as the goddess to worship.

But if you would choose a topaz dragon (I think the only chaotic aligned of the gem dragons) for the dracolyte, it would probably be best for the dracolyte to worship Astilabor, the draconic goddess of wealth, as topaz dragons are highly covetous of treasure and such.

Well both the crystal and topaz are cn, and crystal is very friendly and outgoing so would be very good choice
as for worshiping a non-dragon god i just wouldnt allow it myself, i mean the first paragraph talks about it

Its like the windrider prestige class in masters of the wild, its common sense that the mount has to be a flyer, but the requirements just say "must have a mount"

Thank you everyone for the excellent advice.

When I presented the player with a topaz wyrmling, he didn't like the psionic "undertone". Also, we decided he has to change "allegiance" to a draconic deity.

Thus, with the help of a gold dragon (which are clerics) who is an integral part of the story line of our campaign, he changed to Tamara, and I gave him a gold wyrmling.... primarily for the reason that most other wyrmlings are little more than cannon fodder at this level. While I agree the task is to PROTECT the wyrmling, not have a big combat ally, it's pretty pointless to have a silver wyrmling die to a mediocre fireball.

Also as a part of the story line (a gold wyrm, who due to her age does not engage in activity much anymore, but has a "friend" mercury adult dragon who does help on occasion), the level 10 dragon called will be a Mercury.

That should take care of the potentially overdone power of an adult gold dragon, while giving him a decent wyrmling to work with, and weaving the events into the plot :)

I don't see how it's "common sense" that the mount has to fly. The use of the word "wind" implies speed, as in "run like the wind." The following is all the book has to say about the choice of mounts:

Although an experienced windrider can ride anything that runs, swims, or flies, the typical member of this prestige class settles on one particular kind of mount as a personal favorite.

The book also includes such creatures as tigers and carrion crawlers as examples of mounts.
