The ideology of all players. Some players spend most of there lives behind that screen- watching the unique pattern... wanting so badly to just see what secrets the DM has behind the screen. Well, now its time to get tough. The Screens are fighting back, and through the powerful over deity the Dungeon Master, they have found there way into the world- waiting to get their revenge. DM Screens are almost always found in dungeons- the place where players go. They care little for comfort, and some spend centuries in a small lair- just waiting for that moment. With favor from the god Dungeon Master, the DM Screen can defeat all of its opponents. Standing around 15 feet tall, the DM Screen is a little more then just a huge piece of cardboard. DM Screens take a square shape. With only four sides, and nothing in the center apart from pure magical energy- the DM Screen is effectively hollow. The four sides of the screen, each have a unique patter on it, usually portraying a picture of helpless players being slaughtered by monsters in a dungeon. Each DM Screens picture is unique however, and is prized by some merchants and nobles as artworks. However, it’s got a high price on it, and very few adventurers survive a battle with a DM Screen. The DM Screen is large, and slow. It moves around by millions of tiny feat at the bottom- and top of each edge and side. This makes movement possible no matter which position they are in. Combat: DM Screens rarely waste time in combat. With the ability to determine enemy’s weaknesses, DM Screens have the most pure tactics. They prefer to attack head-on, unless a party’s power or numbers would be too overwhelming, in which case they retreat. They often optimize there slam attacks on simple fighters and rogues, and use there Know Table ability quickly to disable any spell casters that may pose a threat with fire spells. Frightful Presence (Su): The DM Screen is an artwork of terror. The pictures on its body are so horrific, that any intelligent creature would become disoriented. For game purposes, this ability only affects creatures with an intelligence of 3 or more. Creatures within a radius of 30 feet of are subjected to this ability if they have less HD then the DM Screen. Affected creatures must make a Will save (DC 20). Anyone who makes the save remains immune to that DM Screen’s frightful presence for one day. If a creature with fails, they become shaken for 4d6 rounds. Know Table (Su): DM Screen’s have the knowledge of almost every known rule in the universe. This knowledge allows them to apply certain effects on targets. With its large amount of tables, the DM Screen can slow opponents, unbalance them, or even reduce there skill effectiveness. The DM Screen selects one target. As a standard action, the DM Screen can select a random table and apply the awful effects on to the creature. The creature must be within at least 30 feet of the DM Screen. Roll 1d8 to determine the effect. Result Effect 1 Target becomes unbalanced, and is knocked prone (Reflex save DC 20 negates) The target must make an aditional will save (DC 20) or suffer a -4 penalty to effective dexterity for 1d4 minutes 2 Target suffers a -2 penalty to a selected skill (Will DC 20 negates) 3 Target suffers a -6 penalty to a selected skill (Will DC 20 negates) 4 Target suffers a -10 penalty to selected skill (Will DC 20 negates) 5 Target becomes slowed (as the spell). Target must make a Will save (DC 20) or become under the effects of the spell. Lasts 1d4 minutes 6 Target suffers a -4 penalty to attack rolls and AC (Will DC 20 negates) 7 The DM Screen can attempt to turn/rebuke the creature as a good cleric does undead 8 Creature comes under the effect of either an Enlarge or Reduce spell (DMs choice). Fortitude save (DC 20)- treat as 10th level caster. Know Player (Su): With the powers of the DM, the DM Screen can access lost memories of creatures, finding emotionally crippling knowledge- and use it to mock it. This is a standard action, and the creature effected must be within 30 feet of the screen. They must make a will save (DC 20) Or become confused for 1d4 minutes. Actions are determined by a d% (01–10, attacks the DM Screen; 11–20, act normally; 21–50, do nothing but babble incoherently; 51–70, flee away from DM Screen at top possible speed; 71–100, attack nearest creature). Fire Vulnerability (Ex): A DM Screen has vulnerability to fire, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from fire, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure. It may be huge, and the cardboard maybe really tough, but its still cardboard. A successful save halves the damage, but a failure doubles it. Dungeon Master’s Protection (Su): Created by the all powerful god, the Dungeon Master grants magical favor to the DM Screen. 3/day they can call upon these abilities. The effect lasts for 1d4 hours. They gain +3 inherit bonus to AC, and gain the ability to know all there enemy’s strengths and weaknesses. This effectively allows them to see what spells, special abilities and special qualities a creature has. This includes knowledge of all currently prepared spells. With this ability, DM Screens can optimize tactics, gaining a +4 insight bonus to all attack rolls. Construct: Immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, disease, and similar effects. Not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage. |
| Dragon Master09-02-03, 04:37 AM | Reserving first response. NOTE: This monster is in no way stating that the art presented on any DM Screen is bad. I happen to like it. The ability of frightful presence is merely just to show that it can frightent adventurers. I think that the art work is great! Just making sure you all realise that. Oh, and yes- i realie this monster may look funny. That was part of the point- i have done funny thread here before. This is a totally new monster however, and doesn't bring in any of the ideas from any of the other monsters i may have made. (Actually... thats not ENTIRELY true... i have reffered to a 'dungeon master' in other funny threads... but the point is all the material is all new). Yes, this thread may look like just another funny monster, but when it comes to the competition i'm very serious about it, and i ask you to be too. I don't have 3.5, and the SRD is hard to work from. So natrually, a lot of my effort is going into a 'unique idea' area of the competition. |
| Dragon Master09-03-03, 05:20 AM | http://www.geocities.com/flammabledragon/DMbump.TXT What? No one likes my funny DM Screen? Well, come on- what about errors then. I've never used 3.5 before in my life, so i've had to of made SOME errors. |
| Rothgar Skullsplitter09-03-03, 12:03 PM | BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAaaa...Oh...sorry, got a little carried away there for second. :D Good concept DM; very original. :) Hell, I'm surprised I never thought of something like that for all those time during games when the players would try to peek over the screen and look at all my notes and maps. That would've been an encounter to remember. :D |
| Archeaterius09-03-03, 01:48 PM | What a satanic mind you hide in there? The only thing remaining yet is the satanic, draconic, vampiric, unholy, hideous, ultimate dire wolf of player consumption+8!!!:D :D :D In any case, a VERY good idea I would say, I salute you, and I will make very good use of it in my campaign!!! .I would suggest to put a stomp and a trample attack on the "creature". And now let's laugh: AXaXAxxAXAXAXAXAxAXAXAX :invasion: |
| Archeaterius09-03-03, 01:54 PM | Oh, I'd suggest adding a lot of Int, Wis, Cha. Especially since the creature has a lot of Knowledge. Remember, not all constructs are mindless. Inevitables are a good example. Also, give it more attacks, like engulf with its pages!!! |
| Martin09-03-03, 02:54 PM | This is great Dragon Master! Good to see you're still making funny stuff - even if this time it's for a competition. Unfortuately I haven't got round to making a DM screen (in real life) and so my DM screen monster would probably be a pile of pillows or something... not quite so menacing  Anyway: Yeah, I agree. Intelligence represents quickness of learning and factual knowledge generally and the DM screen has a lot of that! Well factual knowledge anyway, I'd be worried if my DM screen (Cushions or otherwise) started learning trignometry. (Note - Why do you think the DM seems so all knowing? ;) ) I look foward to whatever crazy thing you do next! |

(Note - Why do you think the DM seems so all knowing? ;) ) I look foward to whatever crazy thing you do next! Hiya Martin! Thanks for your comments. Yeah, intelligence was a problem when i made it. The reason i left it out, is because there are apparently new rules in 3.5 that give them some wierd skill and feat progression... i've only got the SRD- and that is SOO hard to work with. I can't find anything. As well, the idea behind it is that the tables and the knowledge 'behind the screen' is what supplies it with its knowledge. Effectively, its still just a mindless monster attacking PCs that the DM hates. Originally i was going to have a crush attack, but it didn't fit in with the four sides of the DM screen and i just gave up after a while. When i get home today from work, i may ad another ability. Thanks for all your sugesstions guys (and girls if there are any out there) EDIT: Oh, and of course the DM is all knowing! He's the DM! He knows all (at least IMC he does...) Some ideas for some new abilities would be summon monster abilities (because it does have the powers of the all powerful Dungeon Master) |
| Jkol the Butcher09-03-03, 08:17 PM | This looks really cool -- the only thing I can think of that is a problem is that the rules for elemental vulnerability have changed w/ 3.5 Creatures with an elemental vulnerability now always take +50% damage regardless of the success or failure of a save. see pg. 291 of the 3.5 dmg for more info. good luck in the contest! |
| Dragon Master09-03-03, 09:09 PM | Ah, thanks for that. I'll put that in when i get home- Anymore ideas? |
| Dragon Master09-04-03, 08:59 AM | Ok, i added a know player ability (hehehe), fixed up the fire vulnerability, added the "construct" part in the descriptive text, removed the conversation at the beggining and changed a bit of the description in the know table ability. I would have liked to have kept the convo at the beggining, but it brought my total descriptive text too high, so i had to delete it, just scrapping my total descriptive text at a compfortable 967 words. Just under the 1000 word limit. :D |
| Archeaterius09-04-03, 12:48 PM | Well, the skill points for a construct are 3 x (2+Int modifier+HD), so in that case its skill points would be 19 x (2+Int modifier). You should also add feats, as in the new edition, intelligent constructs get feats. |
| Dragon Master09-04-03, 09:05 PM | What are the rules for feats with constructs? EDIT: Just saw teh polls. Too late- ah well. |
| Archeaterius09-07-03, 03:43 PM | As for all the other creatures. 1 feat at 1st level plus and additional feat at 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter. |
| Dragon Master09-08-03, 02:09 AM | Oh well, now the comp is over, i'll just list this as another one of my funny monsters... hehe. I'll probably do some of those feats and skills as soon as i can. |
