I seem to remember that in 2nd edition, if an extraplanar creature died on a plane other than it's own, it was taken back to it's homeplane and couldn't return for a number of years. Is there anything like that in 3.5, that anyone knows of?

in 3e/3.5, it simply dies if slain anywhere, permanently.

in 1e/2e, i seem to remember the Rules of Banishment - modified rules that stated the fiend killed anywhere other than his home plane is banished back there, and cannot leave for 100 years, unless deemed so by their slayer.

*shakes his head about the AD&D sec. rule*
When outsiders die on the material plane, they are dead.
Plain and simple. And they can't be revived under normal circumstances.

Depending of course wether the Outsider in question was Summoned <Eg Summon monster_ spell> in which case only the conjured body dies with the outsider being unconscious on its home plane for a day. Called <eg Gate> outsiders are 'really all there' and if killed are dead, unless something like a Wish is used.

In 3e: If they are summoned they simply go back to their home plane. If they are physically present (ie. Gated, Planar Binding, or they used a portal) then they are permenantly dead.

2e / Planescape had very detailed rules regarding which fiends would reform if killed outside of their home plane. For instance, Arcanaloths could only be permenantly killed on Gehenna. Some weaker fiends were simply dead when killed, but the more powerful fiends generally just reformed slowly on their home planes if killed anywhere outside of that. 3e nominally revoked all of that in the name of simplicity.

Of course lack of detail is never a really good thing, so if the more specific material is to your liking, it's detailed in 'Faces of Evil: The Fiends'.
