Do Trolls usually wear clothes? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-17-06, 09:41 PM The troll in the monster manual was stark naked, and I do not remember trolls having any cold resistance, so wouldn't trolls freeze at night, especially in the winter. If they do not wear clothes, how do they keep warm if they appear in region: Cold Hills?
OR
Do trolls usually wear clothes and the one in the monster manual is an nudist?

08-17-06, 10:55 PM Via rules in Frostburn and Sandstorm, creatures are immune to the effects of their native enviroments, including temperatures. Thus though a polar bear has no resistance to cold either it can survive comfortably in below 0 temperatures.

Unless the creature is used to living in cold weather, such as your average troll, which it appears can survive in temperatures down to -20 without having to make a single roll. Then of course there is the convenient regeneration.

Your typical wild troll doesn't wear clothes but a troll ranger or any other will class levels would.

Yes, but that's a war troll, an entirely different breed of trolls, as far as D&D is concerned. They're normal trolls that have been enhanced to be awesome tacticians and warriors (I think. Don't have my MMIII out to check at the moment.).

And yet, the one in the pic is definetly not in a cold moutain and it mentions they can be found in tropical jungles in the very first sentence of their description.

What really drives me nuts is this isn't the only time I've seen massive inconsistancies with monsters and their pics, descriptions and such. (Orcus is obese? He looks pretty fit to me)

Easy answer to both questions. They migrate south in the winter like all other fowl beasts or they dig holes in the ground and live out in troll holes for the winter.

As for the second point, Logically they don't but when i think troll I usually think atleast loin cloth for sanity sake.

I say combine these two ideas. Maybe they are affected by extreme environments but their natural regeneration counteracts those effects. Could be why they are so angry all the time, taking constant damage from the hostile environments forces them to constantly regenerate, requiring a large amount of "fuel" (which explains why they are ravenously hungry all the time). I'd be naked and angry too!

Ice Trolls were made for the purpose of dying from fire damage. They're good at it too.

Anyways, War Trolls are Monstrous Humanoids and not Giants because the Giant type sucks. The Monstrous Humanoid type does not.

That's why nurseries in hospitals are typically kept rather warm, to keep tiny infants' bodies from getting chilled. Trolls may simply be big enough that they don't need to cover their skins to hold the heat in.

Little tidbit from the Anatomy & Physiology lecture I gave this morning, there. ;-)
