Does anyone know how fast a Dire Rat grows? And what should I do with it when it does [Archive] - Wizards Community

Earlier today my party killed a few dire rats, and when we searched the area I found a few dire rat pups in a nest. Being an animal lover, I decided to take one and care for it. So, does anyone know how fast they grow, or what I should do with it when it's old enough to train?

I'm a rogue in this campaign, therefore having a rat with a +8 to hide and a +4 to move silently seems somewhat appropriate. Thanks to his sneaking abilities I'm guessing that he could be of use to me, but I'm just not sure how. I've never had a pet in game before, so any help and advice would be appreciated.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can get a character sheet for an animal/pet?

Thanks in advance.

Well, you can always google for an animal companion/familiar character sheet, or buy one of the wizards deluxe packs.

Here's a nifty article that might give you some ideas for the pet: Wild Life (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118x).

A normal rat grows to adulthood in about 12 weeks, I think. Since it's bigger it's going to take longer (that's almost always the rule with most mammals) so I would estimate about 14-16 weeks.

Just an estimate (and I could be wrong about the normal rat time, you might want to google it and be sure.)

Arms and Equipment has rules for exotic pets, training them, etc.

Sink a couple ranks into Handle Animal is the obvious answer. Train it for whatever you think you should, then presto. From the PHB itself:

"Rear a wild animal: DC 15 + HD of animal. To rear an animal means to raise a wild creature from infancy so that it becomes domesticated. A handler can rear as many as three creatures of the same kind at once. A successfully domesticated animal can be taught tricks at the same time it's being raised, or it can be taught as a domesticated animal later"

Offhand, as a rogue's assistant, I think the Hunting purpose could work. That gives them the tricks attack, down, fetch, heel, seek and track.
