Does anyone other than me think WOTC should update all the older AD&D monsters? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been asking them if they were going to update the rest of the monsters but they never give a solid reply. Anyone else notice how they have nice monsters in the retired Monster Mayhem list? If you're reading this, pull out your 2nd edition Monstrous Manual if you have one. It's big and black with some monsters on the cover. Wouldn't it be nice to see (I'm a huge dragon fan) Steel Dragons, Yellow Dragons, Mist Dragons, and Mercury Dragons in a book? I've also been wanting an updated Xvart since I ran into one while playing Baldur's Gate (giant killer smurf heeheehee). I think I saw it in the original Fiend Folio. For those of you who know what I'm talking about, wasn't it disappointing to see the Cloud Dragon (see book mentioned above for info) NOT entered into the Draconomicon as a true dragon i.e. no age categories etc.?

Only Xvarts I ever experienced were through Baldur's Gate or a MUD game. :P Then again I came into D&D in 2000, so I am a stupid head. :)

But yeah, I agree (thought not experienced enough to have a clue) that all old D&D stuff should be reworked to fit in 3.x.

Personally I wanna be able to play or run a Maztica, Horde, etc game without having to convert everything myself (since I don't even know where to start, heh).

No because 80% of the old monsters are really, really stupid. Flumphs, giant space hamsters, nilbogs, wolf-in-sheeps clothing, psuedo-undead, piercer (although these critters are classic despite being really stupid), etc. etc.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few, choice monsters get revised, but all of them? Hell no! :)

I'm still waiting for a 3.5 Baernaloth from WotC. And all the other Planescape/planar monsters that havn't been updated yet.

One word: QUICKLINGs.

Replace the pseudo-undead by the Quickling, and you have them all in the Tome of Horrors. :D

It also contains a version of the Cloud Dragon with all 12 age categories, so it's not just silly-but-classic monsters.

Until then, you can get some converted dragons from the WoTC site:
Steel Dragon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20040328a)
Mist dragon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20031226a)
Mercury dragon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20040103a)

I own the Tome of Horrors because, despite the stupid monsters in the book, there are LOTS of awesome monsters in the book as well. Plus, I was helping to support NG in their endeavor. :)

Giant Space Hamsters and Flumphs (http://www.3rdedition.org/merricb/flumph.htm)!

Uh - not really. I'm sure the designers rather prefer designing than purely updating.

Cheers!

Hey Sucineri! What's your real name? Maybe you're one of my friends in Sacramento. If not, we should hang out. I live about half an hour outside the city! I might be able to expand your knowledge on some things.

Darkmantles are pretty much piercers. They're stalagtite thingeys that attack by dropping on you. The only real differences I can think of are that darkmantles wrap themselves around your head rather than actually piercing you. And they can fly back up and try again.

Pretty much all of the stuff I cared about from the 2nd edition Monster Manual has been converted. I was really disappointed the Grippli weren't in Monster Manual 3, until my friend showed me october's Dragon magazine the other day. Some Planescape stuff would be nice too, although that's never going to happen.

Well, and I wouldn't mind seeing a miniature giant space hamster in 3rd edition.

Which leads to my minor observation. Some monsters name in 2e MM, MM2 and FF are now used for different (though similar) creatures. Take the fire drake in FF, for example, with that pyrophoric (burning blood) breath weapon, it's now an elemental drake in Draconomicon. I hope the 3e storm drake isn't the updated 2e cloud dragon; after all, "cloud dragon" is just a nickname for it (which poses problems if there's a real cloud dragon).

Of course, all this leads me to one question: Seeing as all of us here have some skill in creating monsters, why don't WE update creatures from earlier additions? I don't have anything before 3e, but many of you obviously do, so we should work and update these creatures ourselves.

There are lots of converted monsters on the Creature catalog website.

I haven't had a lot of luck with my links lately... try a google search for "creature catalog" if it doesn't work!

The Nilbog was a good "use once" kind of monster. And there was a Dungeon magazine adventure that did that nicely. After you see a nilbog... you never need one again.

I personally miss the Dracolich. All the baddassness of Liches & dragons. The epic-level BBEG.

There's a Dracolich template in the Draconomicon.

You're not alone. There's still a lot of old favorites that I would like to see again. Damn you, WotC... don't make me whine for an MM4 to cover the monsters that you've still forgotten!!

The intellect devourer from first edition made it into the Expanded Psionics Handbook (3.5 ed book) and I think its about the dumbest creature you can imagine... so being really really dumb can't be the only thing keeping them from updates :ahem:

Its a brain with LEGS!

A brain with legs that claws open your head and goes inside to animate you. How can this not be the epitome of cheeziness?
Kojiro James

Consider meeting one in real life, then the prospect becomes scary. It's not cheesy at all.
The Vorpal Tribble

Consider meeting a giant burger with teeth bouncing towards you in real life, that prospect is scarey as well, but doesn't meant its not cheesy (possibly literally if its the dreaded double-cheeseburger!)

Dude, Illithids keep them as pets! How can you sit there and tell me that anything Illithid related is lame? Illithids are like the ultimate bogeymen of D&D.

Agreed, Illithids are very cool :coolcthul , but I can't get over the whole brain with legs thing. Actually, brainsuckers with pets that have brains with legs makes it even more cheesy!

Mayhap we should start some sort of petition for a 100% monster updates book. I think I was reading the design team interview for MM3 when I saw a reference to a possible future MM4! Did anyone notice how they renamed the old "Arcane" as "Mercane"? Those blue dudes from Union for those of you who have the Epic Level Handbook. At first I thought they were a different kind of monster, but then why create a new race of tall blue merchants when you already have one? And what's up with repeating monsters in different books?! Wouldn't the space be better used to update old ones or add new ones? Anyone out there agree with me? The damn Githyanki show up in at least three books that I know of!!!ARRRGGGHH!!!!!!!!!!! (slams fist into desk...oww)

To get some idea of just how scary they can be, check out Lords of Madness. There's a picture of them attacking Jozan. The thing leaves claw marks in plate armor!

Raise thread much? The last post was over a year and a half ago, you couldn't just let it die in peace? Please refrain from thread necromancy - as cool as zombies are, some things are meant to stay dead.
