| Yenian07-30-04, 01:17 PM | Just a question: Is the CR of the Fiendworm actually 28, or is this incorrect. Now, I've only looked at it on paper, but this seems to be maybe a little on the high side. |
| Ogre4Hire07-30-04, 02:13 PM | It certainly seems to. Same with the Hellfire Wyrm and Pheonix as well. Keep in mind, though, that the Epic Level Handbook hadn't actually been written when these creatures were created, so the designers had a bit of trouble playtesting them, or so I hear. |
| ruleslawyer07-30-04, 03:47 PM | Nonetheless, nothing with a Will save bonus of +10 and no resistance to mind-affecting spells should be CR 28! The fiendwurm is a strong CR 18, IMHO. |
| Mr.Black07-31-04, 12:40 AM | I agree. Another monster with an overpowered CR is the Mountain Giant, who has a low will save for its CR. A high CR monster needs to have the abilities to deal with characters who have many options at their disposal. They need to deal with things like manuverability, invisibility, spells with no saves, high DCs on weak saves, massive amounts of damage through physical attacks, insanely high ACs and other abilities of the PCs. Hopefully the monster manual 3 will not repeat the mistakes of MM2. |
