09-21-06, 05:45 PM Does anyone know where I could find the stats for Guard dogs?
Also is there a expanded equipment price and stats for other dogs (i.e. hunting dogs, war dogs ect)

There are 2 types of dogs in the MM, a normal dog and a riding dog (p271-272).
If you want a dog that fits a specific role, just teach a normal dog or riding dog the respective trick(s) (if they need them). There are further suggestions for tricks in the Masters of the Wild supplemental book.

I would think a guard dog as listed in the PHB is a normal dog trained with the Guard trick.

09-21-06, 08:24 PM I will sometimes vary my dogs slightly by feat selection, but basically any big dog, be it a guard, war, or hunting dog, will use the riding dog stats.

It's right there in the MM. With a guard dog, just use the stats for a dog (p271), rather than those for a riding dog (p272).

09-22-06, 02:30 PM I saw the different stats, but it is not clear by the description of the 2 sizes which I should use. The normal dog is 20-50 which is kind of smaller then I picute a guard dog.

09-23-06, 04:49 AM Since there are 2 prices, one for a guard dog and another for a riding dog, why would you think the guard dog also necessarily was a riding dog?

If you want a bigger meaner guard dog, just buy a riding dog, teach it the guard trick, and call it a guard dog.

09-23-06, 12:55 PM One could also assume that guard dogs are not trained for riding in combat, which would account for at least part of the price difference between the types. It makes them loose armor proficiency and renders them unsuitable as mounts, both of which are potential problems for a combat animal.

09-28-06, 10:38 PM Personally I have to think a guard dog would have be a large "work" bred rather then a "small" breed as the stats describe. Thinking about it the not trained for riding explanation makes sense. When you think about it training a dog to carry alittle person would be a monumental task.

10-13-06, 11:16 PM Use the Mastiff hound in races of faerun and add the "war animal" template from monster manual 2. Think Irish wolf hounds bred and trained for war.

Worgs, shadow mastiffs, climbdogs, yeth hounds, monsterous spiders/other insects, and others would be cooler, but for a 1st lvl char. you could just make him a druid or wizard, and get the dog for free.

Get a chraal... they can do serious damage.

I have a fourth lvl character with two worgs, and that is a very good combo. esspecially with the worg warwagon and the bracelet of friends. just some ideas.

10-14-06, 12:11 PM The upside of having a dog as opposed to a more exotic creature is nobody will pay much attention to it. You won't get grilled at the gate. or turned away, by the town guard. If you're on the run and have an exotic beast you might as well leave a trail of bread crumbs for your enemies to follow. A guy with a dog can hope to leave town unnoticed. And at mid levels a dog isn't much help in a fight but can still track and help keep watch.

I let a player buy a "fighting dog" (riding dog stats) with max HP and a 16 (instead of 15) STR and tricks in place. But he paid 250gp for it. My inspiration was a neighborhood dog when I was growing up. This thing was the biggest Doberman I've ever seen, freakishly big for a Dobie. So it was that Jack, Son of Jack purchased Slag for the princely sum of 200 and 50 pieces of gold.

10-14-06, 03:45 PM There is a warbeast template in MM2 for war dogs. Slap it on a riding dog.
Or, alternatively, use the stats for a wolf.
