| King-bargh08-30-06, 04:44 AM | When a doppelganger takes up the likeness of a person, does his clothes change as well? If yes, how? Is it his skin that imitates pants, shoes etc? How do armor work and so on... |
| dengarbountyhunter09-02-06, 03:29 PM | Change Shape (Su): A doppelganger can assume the shape of any Small or Medium humanoid. In humanoid form, the doppelganger loses its natural attacks. A doppelganger can remain in its humanoid form until it chooses to assume a new one. A change in form cannot be dispelled, but a doppelganger reverts to its natural form when killed. A true seeing spell or ability reveals its natural form. Ahh, even in its description it is not clear wether it skin really changes shape or if the doppleganger creates an illusion of. I think that "assume the shape" really means "become physically", but it is really your call. In my game, it is a physical transformation because I find it makes more sense. In the first case, the answer your question is obvious: a doppelganger physically becomes a humanoid. Does the description of "humanoid" include any gear? The problem with this theory is the effect of antimagic field because Change Shape is a supernatural effect. But if it is really a simple illusion, like disguise self, then the doppelganger can appear (visually only) to have clothes, armor or wizard robes if he likes. The problem with that theory is that there is a Will (disbelief) save to disguise self, while it is a Spot check (opposed to the doppelganger's Disguise check) to recognize a doppelganger in another form then his own. Like I said, ask your DM (or decide if you are the DM) which way the doppelganger's Change Shape ability works and you'll know if he can appear to have clothes or armor. |

| CipherTheory09-03-06, 11:14 AM | This is one of those moments when one has to put flavor over function. The idea is that a doppleganger can people into thinking it's someone else. Now, immagine if it's shapechange ability were limited only to "humaoid form" in the strictest sense. Cleric: "Hey Garuuk, where are you?" Doppleganger (disguised as Garuuk the barbarian): "I'm over here!" Cleric: "Oh thank Pelor, I thought I'd..." Cleric turns the corner "SWEET MERCIFUL GODS! WHERE THE :censored: ARE YOUR CLOTHES!!!" Needless to say that wouldn't work too well. Obviously at least some gear has to be duplicated. Now let's look at the same scenerio where the doppleganger can imitate clothing, but not gear. Cleric: "Hey Garuuk, where are you?" Doppleganger (disguised as Garuuk the barbarian): "I'm over here!" Cleric: "Oh thank Pelor I thought I'd..." Cleric turns the corner "Hey wait a minute, you're not Garuuk. He would sooner die than abandon his Flaming Greataxe!!! You're one of the Kung-Fu Creatures on the Rampage... 3!... or a doppleganger. Either way, I smite thee!!!" Cleric then smites the doppleganger. Now I'm not saying that the duplicated equipment should be functional. Far from it. Still, the doppleganger should be able to recreate them visually in order to create a convincing illusion. To give a filmatic reference: in X-Men I, Wolverine easily slices through Mistique's claws when she's imitating him. (A :cookie: to anyone who gets the kung-fu creatures on the rampage 3 reference, btw) |
