As you can tell, I am fascinated by Doppelgangers, and had a question about them...

I was wondering if anybody knows about doppelganger society, like ecology, psychology, anatomy, etc.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I am not asking for Official WOTC material only, as I would like to hear others opinion on how a shape shifting race like this would adapt and survive.

As I see it, Doppelgangers wont make many friends. At best, they might have a few 'contacts', doppelgangers and humanoids, but I see the mas very solitary, and thus have no actual culture of their own, more mimiking the culture of others.

In a very old issue of Dragon magazine (like circa issue # 80 or thereabouts), there was an article entitled "The Psychology of the Doppelganger." It put forth that doppelgangers are (or once were) akin to humans, and they cannot reproduce unless they take humanoid form and humanoid mates. They view humans as cattle to prey upon, and see it as "reclaiming their birthright" to steal the life and trappings of a wealthy human. (Y'ever notice that doppelgangers never seem to take on the identities of poor people? Odd, isn't it?)
