When a doppleganger shifts can he shape-shift his clothes? I think this would only work if he is wearing no armor. Thoughts???

Dopplegangers don't generally wear clothes, as they can create them whenever they shapeshift. Armor, however, cannot be createdif it is havier than padded

So If I am in the guise of a little boy wearing tan overalls then I can change into an elderly women wearing a black robe? Thanks for the help!

Ok but the true questions are these:
1.) What would happen to the clothing if it got got removed? Just go p00f?
2.) So the doppelganger cant change clothing if he is wearing a robe of eyes or something?

I recall seeing another thread or artical like this, but not the specifics. My take on it, though, was that they COULD shape/color their bodies to LOOK like the clothes they wanted (but that is a LOT of detail to take in while also scanning thoughts for every little iota that might come in handy), so would take a lot longer to get it just right), or they can put on actual clothes just like anyone else -- but then that could constrain their changing and have to be left behind. DM's perrogative!

Change self is a crazy ability. The Errata says you cannot shape clothing from nothing. But your armor and clothing will reshape with you if you change sizes. Also the shape changer can't change the composition of the clothing, it just resizes with the creature. I have a couple of players with this ability so I had to do some research.

Since I play one of these I have to admit that they are kinda broken in the shapechanging department.

Anyway, the errata is here:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a

Look in the Monster Manual errata. Its on page 2 of 6.

Despite not being the one who said they would post this, I hope it helps.

I played a doppleganger and i didnt see anything saying about clothing changing. so what i did was get a hat of disguise to change my clothing.

another nice bonus to that is technicly the bonus to disguse checks are unnamed and should stack. though most dm's would rule that they dont as they for the most part do the same thing.

as far as I know dopplegangers cannot change clothing they are actually wearing and not shaped out of their bodies and also cannot shape armor. I have been known to be wrong, from time to time...., but not very often. Simply changing features or growing an inch or two while still mainting a humaniod shape does not effect your clothes although a bigger size increase will shred regular clothes while armor and magical clothes either hamper you transformation or are destroyed as well, some magical items that are able to change size can freely change with you. And then of course there is the afore mentioned Hat of Disguise, it can change freely, obviously.

Well the errata on Change Shape says that your clothing and armor, etc changes with you. But it doesn't say anything about forming clothing out of your body. that seems to be a bit more than was intended. As i read it you change into the desired form but only the body and it's features. No clothing, now it's possible that I'm wrong I doubt it.

Here are my two cents on the shape shifting with reguards to clothing, a creature should be able to make clothes from it's tranmuted skin but it is still apart of the creature. Meaning that while a doppelganger can make a robe from it's own flesh complete with pockets [if desired] it can't remove it, just like it can't take it's skin off [without damage]. Given this line of thought it should be possible for the doppleganger to shift it's clothing into armor, but not subsume armor into it's flesh. I would however not allow the armor to provide an armor bonus, just the natural armor bonus of the creature should be fine.
This gives dopplegangers more utility in their escape from parties of adventurers. It's much easier to eascape when you can change into another person completely, not just mimic their face. Seeing a creature wearing the exact same clothes that your enemy was just wearing doesn't say much for your disguise powers, and the idea of a doppleganger turning into a naked guy after shedding his disguise cloths seems kinda silly. I guess the creature could just change into an animal of ome variety to not worry about such things, but I'd rather the DG in question were there to say "He went thataway!"
Might be just me, but I've never found the polymorph spells too powerful.

yea it's probably just you. Change Shape does not allow you to make clothing. Even if it did your "clothing" wouldn't provide any warmth or protection from the sun so it could be bad in that respect. Regardless if a doppleganger wants to screw with people's visuals he should have a had of disguise for those quick wardrobe changes. Trust me I have a couple players with this ability it is ruff as is.
