Doppelganger Template? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-12-07, 09:41 PM I'm looking for a Doppelganger-type template. Does anyone know if one has been officially published or if there was an attempt put up on the boards?

I checked about, but I can't find anything and without some form of guidance I can guarantee that it would be horribly off.

To flesh out the idea a bit, I'm creating a campaign setting for a small group and I want to set up a secret society that runs everything by infiltrating all of the other groups. To this purpose, the Doppelganger abilities of Detect Thoughts and Alter Self are ideal, but the monster class progression limits how effective these creatures could be when and if the PCs decide to take them on. The reason that I would like to go with the template is so that I can apply changes to a creature on the fly, since there is a remote possibility that the PCs will undertake the ritual to join the society. Also, I don't need for them to have increases in stats or skills as a result of this change, so I am hoping that some balanced ground exists. I want to be able to apply the template to several different races, rather then just creating a new race.

If no appropriate template options come to mind, is there a general FAQ or guide to creating a template? Both the MM and SRD are disturbingly silent on any sort of guidelines, unlike the Bloodline options provided in the SRD.

Then again, the Plague Carrier (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/pg20011219b) does get 3 special attacks and a special quality for LA +1. I would guess that Detect Thoughts would be listed as a Special Attack and Alter Self as a Special Quality? (I like to get things exactly right. :rolleyes:)

Yes, to everything. I'd also include the Bluff and Disguise bonuses.

Besides, LA is based on power, not quantity, of abilities. Detect Thoughts and Alter Self are good, but not gamebreaking. Either way, the final decision on LA is your's alone.
